Lu Dongming clasped his wife’s hand, “No need to worry about her. Mr. Fang is secretly protecting her; she won’t be in any danger.”
“You’ve been working all day. Tired, aren’t you?”
He patted his shoulder, “Rest here.”
Hai Ling smiled and leaned against his shoulder.
His large hand promptly wrapped around her.
“Dongming.”
“Hm.”
“Having you feels so good. I finally have someone to rely on.”
Before, she was her sister’s support, her son’s support.
Now, she had someone too.
Lu Dongming said fondly, “Having you is even better. You’re my support, my pillar.”
“Darling, thank heaven we met.”
They met, grew to know each other, fell in love, and would spend their lives together.
“Do you remember our first meeting?”
Lu Dongming chuckled, “How could I forget? You were pushing a pram with Yangyang in it, and you accidentally bumped into my car.”
“My brand-new car got scratched. Zhanyin called me, saying the person who hit my car was his sister-in-law. For Zhanyin’s sake, I only asked you for a small sum, just enough for repair costs.”
His car was insured, and repairs were covered, but he was annoyed about the scratch on his new car. Since Hai Ling offered to pay, he let her.
At first, he had no fondness for her. His only soft spot was for Yangyang.
Though Yangyang was scared of him.
Seeing Yangyang’s cuteness and Hai Ling’s constant apologies, clearly frightened, he held his temper.
Hai Ling sat up, looking at him, “So it was Zhanyin who called you.”
“Zhanyin hid his identity after the flash marriage, but he did a lot for Haitong behind the scenes. She cared most about you and Yangyang, so he treated you like family.”
“Honestly, when Zhanyin was forced by Grandma Zhan to marry your sister, none of us thought it’d work out. Who’d have thought Haitong could melt the ice in his heart? Now they’re so in love it makes people jealous.”
Lu Dongming took her hand again, “Darling, I’ll make you the envy of others too.”
“I already am,” Hai Ling said, leaning back on his shoulder, blissful.
She recalled meeting him when she was still married to Zhou Honglin, who had proposed splitting expenses evenly.
He knew she’d been out of work for years, disconnected from society. The money she’d earned before was coaxed out of her to renovate their marital home, leaving her with little.
Her sister gave her five thousand a month, but told her to say it was only two thousand, fearing Zhou Honglin would stop contributing altogether.
Yet it became his excuse to argue, claiming her sister was freeloading, eating and living off him.
All his pre-marriage promises were tossed into the Pacific, forgotten.
When a man stops loving you, he’s truly heartless.
Those days were unbearable.
Hai Ling rarely thought of them. After losing weight, with her sister and brother-in-law’s support, she rebuilt her career. She might not be wildly successful, but she’d found happiness.
Her life changed with the divorce.
“Don’t dwell on the past. My fault for bringing it up,” Lu Dongming said, noticing her silence and guessing she was recalling her struggles with Zhou Honglin.
“I’ve made peace with it,” Hai Ling smiled. “Really, I never dreamed I’d have today.”
