Uncle Zeng curled his lip and said, “That guy only passed the civil service exam and climbed up the ladder, then he dumped Xiaoya. She was badly hurt, and even now, three years later, she still has not started a new relationship. It is all because of that scumbag.”
“Our Xiaoya is so outstanding. In the future she will definitely marry a good man and make that scumbag regret it. But that good man is absolutely not Lin Jian. In my eyes, Lin Jian does not count as a good man.”
Aunt Zeng remained dissatisfied with Lin Jian.
She was very close to her sister-in-law and planned to have a proper talk with her later, so that she would not be fooled by Lin Jian’s outward appearance.
“Lin Jian really is quite good. He is better than that scumbag.”
“But his original family is no good. There is too big a gap between the Lin family and our Zeng family. The families are not well-matched. If Xiaoya married Lin Jian, the whole of our family might end up being drained by the Lins.”
“Lin Jian is the classic capable phoenix man.”
Uncle Zeng fell silent.
He sighed. “If our family were just a little wealthier, we could dream about the young masters of the Zhan family. The Zhan family still has three unmarried young masters. Apart from the youngest one, who might be younger than Xiaoya, the other two are about the same age as her. Alas, the Zhan family really is an excellent household with famously good family values. I often hear people mention it, but the gap between our family and theirs is far too great.”
In the eyes of ordinary people, the Zeng family counted as wealthy.
Yet compared to the Zhan family, which had nearly a century of heritage, they were merely an ordinary household.
“That is only what we have heard. In reality, every wife married to a Zhan young master has serious background, all proper daughters of top-tier families.”
“Stop thinking about such unrealistic things. I believe when Xiaoya’s destined partner arrives, she will certainly marry a good man. Just remember this: in future, no matter how much Lin Jian tries to curry favour with you, do not sell your own niece.”
Aunt Zeng reminded her husband.
“How could I? No matter how much I appreciate Lin Jian, he is still an outsider. Xiaoya is my real niece. We watched her grow up and doted on her. How could I possibly sell her out?”
Zeng Xiaoya had no idea that, after she went upstairs, her uncle and aunt were discussing her and Lin Jian.
She was on night shift that evening. After going upstairs she ate something light, then returned to her room to rest.
When she woke up, it was already early evening and time for dinner.
The auntie who cooked came upstairs, knocked on her door, and called her down to the second floor to eat.
Zeng Xiaoya got up, freshened up quickly, went downstairs, and in the dining room on the second floor saw Aunt Zeng and her youngest cousin brother, who was still in senior high school. His school was not far from home, so he commuted and came back for dinner every day.
“Big sis, time to eat.”
The little cousin helped the auntie carry out the dishes.
“Are Uncle and Aunt very busy?”
Zeng Xiaoya also helped carry dishes. After everything was on the table, she washed her hands again, then took out five sets of bowls and chopsticks.
“They are not busy now. I will go call Second Uncle and Second Aunt up for dinner.”
The cousin went to the stairwell and shouted downwards, “Second Uncle, Second Aunt, dinner is ready.”
He was the youngest of the third branch of the Zeng family.
“Coming, right away.”
Aunt Zeng answered from downstairs.
No one else was coming home for dinner, so it was just Zeng Xiaoya and a few of them.
That was how it was for doctors. They were too busy. If their workplace was far from home, they would not come back but order takeaway, eat in a rush, rest briefly, then return to their hectic work.
