Ye Wudi’s heart trembled.
It was only at this moment that he understood Ye Qiu’s meaning.
“You’re saying that after Xiao Jiu dies, I should take his place as the commander of the Northern Border?” Ye Wudi asked.
Ye Qiu nodded.
Ye Wudi said, “That’s a bit tricky. After all, I’ve never served in the military.”
Ye Qiu smiled. “Third Uncle, you’re overthinking it.”
“The Northern Border is a frontier that needs a powerful and respected figure to hold it. If something really happens to Xiao Jiu, you’d be the best choice to guard the Northern Border.”
“As for your lack of military service, I don’t think that’s an issue at all.”
“As long as Elder Tang acknowledges you, that’s enough.”
Ye Wudi felt a stir of interest.
Though he had long been immersed in martial arts and uninterested in power, the prospect of becoming a regional commander was quite tempting.
Who among men doesn’t dream of being a hero?
Of standing tall and proud?
Of galloping across battlefields, achieving great deeds, and defending the nation?
They do!
Every man does!
Ye Wudi was no exception.
Ye Qiu continued, “Third Uncle, you’ve been by Elder Tang’s side for so long. He must be well aware of your abilities and loyalty.”
“If you also have Grandfather and the War God’s support, I think your chances of becoming the Northern Border commander are high.”
“Of course, that’s assuming the old man’s calculations are correct and Xiao Jiu really does die.”
Ye Wudi thought for a moment and said, “I’ll discuss it with Father when I return to the capital and see his stance.”
Ye Qiu nodded slightly. “Grandfather is far-sighted. It’s best to consult him.”
Ye Wudi added, “Master Longbrow said Xiao Jiu will die by your hand. If he’s right, why do you think you’d kill Xiao Jiu?”
Ye Qiu gave a wry smile. “I really can’t think of a reason to kill him.”
“Xiao Jiu isn’t my enemy. Why would I kill him?”
“Unless…”
“Unless what?” Ye Wudi asked.
Ye Qiu smiled and said, “Unless Xiao Jiu courts his own death.”
Ye Wudi rolled his eyes. How could someone like Xiao Jiu possibly court his own death?
“Third Uncle, it’s getting late. Rest early!”
“Alright.”
With that, the two returned to their respective rooms.
After returning to his room, Ye Wudi took a hot bath. He had just come out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, when there was a knock at the door.
“Who’s there?” Ye Wudi called softly.
No one answered.
Ye Wudi didn’t think much of it and opened the door.
In an instant, a fragrant breeze swept in.
A familiar figure stood outside.
Dragon Lady!
Ye Wudi hadn’t expected Dragon Lady to appear at his door. His expression changed drastically as he asked in shock, “What are you doing here?”
“I told you I’d come to see you.” Dragon Lady’s almond-shaped eyes sparkled with a smile as she asked, “Surprised?”
“Surprised, my foot. More like startled.” Ye Wudi’s face darkened as he snapped, “Leave now.”
Not only did Dragon Lady not leave, but she stood there smiling. “What’s this? Are you afraid Ye Wushuang will find me and kill me?”
“Ye Wudi, oh Ye Wudi, you’re such a hypocrite.”
“You’re clearly worried about me but pretend you want to drive me away.”
Ye Wudi wasn’t worried about Dragon Lady but about Ye Qiu and the others.
Ye Wushuang was an imposter posing as Master Longbrow. If Dragon Lady discovered this and went on a killing spree here, it would be trouble.
After all, this was just the guest building of the Northern Border Military District, with minimal guards, unlike the heavily fortified headquarters of the Northern Border Military District.
Otherwise, Dragon Lady wouldn’t have been able to sneak in so easily and appear at his door.
“Go. I need to rest,” Ye Wudi said, moving to close the door.
Slap!
Dragon Lady pressed her hand against the door, stopping him. With tears in her eyes, she said, “Ye Wudi, I risked so much to come see you, and you’re driving me away? I’m so hurt… sob sob sob…”
Dragon Lady began to sob softly.
Men, especially straightforward ones, often become flustered and clueless about how to comfort a crying woman.
Ye Wudi was one such man.
Seeing Dragon Lady’s tears, he panicked and asked, “What do you want?”
Dragon Lady said, “Ye Wudi, don’t you know the basic courtesy of hospitality?”
“I’ve come to see you, and you won’t even invite me in for a glass of water?”
“Do you hate me that much?”
“Under under under…”
Ye Wudi, helpless, said, “Stop crying. Come in!”
Dragon Lady immediately ceased her tears and slipped into the room.
Once inside, she glanced around.
The room was a suite, with a living area outside and a bedroom inside.
Ye Wudi poured a glass of water for Dragon Lady and pointed to the sofa in the living area. “Sit for a bit. I’m going inside to put on some clothes.”
Ye Wudi was a rather traditional man.
At the moment, he was only wrapped in a towel, with most of his body exposed, feeling somewhat embarrassed in front of Dragon Lady.
“Why bother with clothes? I’m not a stranger.” Dragon Lady glanced at Ye Wudi’s chest muscles and said, “You’ve got a great physique.”
Her words made Ye Wudi blush furiously.
“Well, I never. You’re not even afraid of death, yet you’re shy?” Dragon Lady giggled.
Ye Wudi asked, “It’s the middle of the night. What do you really want?”
Dragon Lady said, “I just wanted to see you.”
“Ye Wudi, thank you for saving me during the day. If it weren’t for you, I’d be dead.”
“Do you know what I was thinking when Ye Wushuang unleashed that sword qi?”
Ye Wudi said coldly, “How would I know what you were thinking?”
Dragon Lady said, “I was thinking, I finally met you, but I’m going to die before I could marry you. I was so unwilling.”
“I came to see you tonight for another reason.”
“I wanted to ask when you plan to marry me.”
Marry you?
Coming all this way in the freezing cold just to ask that?
Is this woman out of her mind?
Ye Wudi said coldly, “I’ve said it before. I won’t marry you.”
“Ye Wudi, must you be so heartless?” Dragon Lady’s eyes welled up with tears again as she spoke.
Ye Wudi, as if blind to it, said ruthlessly, “You’ve seen me, and you’ve asked your question. Now you can leave.”
Dragon Lady said pitifully, “Ye Wudi, kicking me out in the middle of the night—how can you bear it? What if I run into bad people?”
“You and I have no connection. Why wouldn’t I bear it? Besides, with your skills, what bad person would dare touch you?” Ye Wudi snapped. “Get lost.”
“I’m not going,” Dragon Lady said, sitting motionless on the sofa.
Ye Wudi was growing irritated. “What do you want?”
Dragon Lady suddenly giggled and said, “Ye Wudi, it’s so cold. Don’t you think having someone to warm your bed would be nice?”
Ye Wudi understood her implication and cursed, “You have the nerve to say such things? Utterly shameless. I don’t need you to warm my bed. Get out.”
“Wudi, you’ve misunderstood. I meant for you to warm my bed.”
As Dragon Lady spoke, she struck like lightning, sealing Ye Wudi’s acupuncture points.
