The big white rabbit rolled a few times on the ground before scrambling up, nodding at Mo Fan. Then, with a shake of its head, it transformed into a woman’s face in an instant.
As expected, a demon!
Mo Fan’s heart leapt with excitement, and he noticed this rabbit demon was strikingly beautiful.
Ignoring her rabbit body, her face alone was that of a stunning beauty.
Her chubby little face held a pair of large, watery eyes, with scarlet pupils like two rubies. Her skin was fair as jade, her high nose bridge led to a cherry-like mouth, and her snow-white long hair cascaded freely, slightly dishevelled. A pair of white rabbit ears stood atop her head, not jarring but adding a touch of charm.
“What a demoness!”
Mo Fan marvelled inwardly, then heard the rabbit demon say to him, “Lord Toad, please save me, humans are hunting me!”
Humans?
Mo Fan was startled and quickly asked, “What kind of humans? Where?”
He feared those sanctimonious humans most, utterly unreasonable, especially that female immortal from the mountain sect, venomous as a snake, capturing him for alchemy at first sight, terrifying beyond words.
Hearing of humans chasing her, he was naturally alarmed.
“It’s an old hunter, he’s chased me over several ridges. He’ll catch up soon, please, Lord Toad, you must save me!” the rabbit demon pleaded.
A hunter?
Mo Fan frowned slightly, asking again, “Are you sure it’s just an ordinary hunter, not some immortal with spells and divine powers?”
His words made the rabbit demon pause, then she gave a wry smile, “Lord Toad, you’re joking. Where would immortals come from in these parts? It’s just an ordinary hunter, not even a village guard or demon catcher.”
“Just an ordinary human, and you’re this panicked? You’re a demon, how can you fear a mortal?” Mo Fan asked, sceptical.
“Lord Toad, you don’t know the struggles of us lesser demons. I only recently transformed, and aside from refining my throat bone to speak and forming a human head, I have no other powers. How could I stand against that old hunter?”
“He has a fine iron spear that can kill tigers and leopards, and a bow for hunting eagles, it’s terrifying,” the rabbit demon said, her face full of distress.
At this, Mo Fan understood one thing: not all demons awakened innate powers upon transformation!
This little rabbit demon was a perfect example.
But what frustrated him was that a proper demon could be hunted by a human, truly an oddity among demons.
“Lord Toad, please save my life for the sake of our shared demon kind. I’ll offer true fruits and spirit herbs in gratitude for your great kindness!”
Seeing Mo Fan stay silent, the rabbit demon mimicked human gestures, bowing and pleading repeatedly.
Mo Fan didn’t rush to agree, instead turning his gaze to her and asking, “You seem clever for a rabbit demon, and knowledgeable. Do you know if there are other demon kin in these mountains?”
“I do know… oh no, the old hunter’s coming!”
The rabbit demon began to answer but suddenly froze, her expression changing as she pointed into the distance, crying out.
Mo Fan followed her gaze and saw, about a hundred metres away, an old man in beast pelts with grey hair dart out from the forest.
The old man carried a spear on his back, a large bow slung over his shoulder, and a quiver full of arrows at his waist, looking formidable at a glance.
Though aged, he moved swiftly, his steps as fast as a mountain ape, quickly approaching the small hill.
“This is an ordinary hunter?”
Mo Fan’s eyes widened, his eyelids twitching. The old man’s speed was unreal!
It was likely faster than his own, with only that foolish tiger Erha able to outpace him.
“Lord Toad, save me!!”
The rabbit demon stared at Mo Fan pitifully, her big eyes brimming with tears, her expression heart-wrenchingly vulnerable.
“Get lost, who’s your kin?”
“You’re a rabbit, I’m a toad, our ancestors wouldn’t even share a lineage. What kind of nonsense family are you claiming?”
“Didn’t expect you to be such a rabbit, luring this dangerous hunter into Grandpa Mo’s territory, trying to get me killed!”
Mo Fan cursed at the rabbit demon, then turned and bolted, shouting, “Trying to harm Grandpa Mo? Not a chance!”
The rabbit demon was stunned. She hadn’t expected this Lord Toad to run faster than her, his human-like sprint proving he was a great demon!
Seeing this, she chased after him, explaining, “Lord Toad, you’ve misunderstood, I meant kin as fellow demons, we should help each other!”
“Why are you following me? Get as far away as you can, don’t drag me down!”
Mo Fan glanced back, seeing the rabbit demon hot on his heels, nearly cursing in frustration.
If it were truly an ordinary human chasing her, he wouldn’t be afraid, but that old man looked extraordinary. Why should he save her?
He might end up losing his own life!
A bad deal like that, Mo Fan wasn’t about to take.
“Lord Toad, don’t you want to know where our other kin are? Save me, and I’ll tell you!” The rabbit demon clung to him, hinting at her knowledge.
Mo Fan’s heart stirred, but thinking of the fearsome old hunter, he shook his head again, cursing, “I told you, stop bloody following me!”
Swish—
But at that moment, a whooshing sound cut through the air, followed by a scream from behind.
Mo Fan’s heart jolted, realizing the rabbit demon might be injured, his fear intensifying. Before he could run further, another whoosh sounded, sending a chill down his spine.
Sensing imminent danger, Mo Fan didn’t think, rolling on the spot in a toad tumble to dodge.
“Thud!”
An arrow grazed past his head, embedding into a tree not far ahead.
Staring at the arrow in the trunk, Mo Fan’s face paled, instinctively touching his head, relieved to find no wounds.
“Hahaha… looks like my luck’s in today, stumbling on two little demons!”
At that moment, a hearty laugh grew closer.
Mo Fan turned to see the old hunter nearing, holding a large bow with two arrows nocked, locking onto them.
“This time it’s worth it, venturing deep into the Demon Spirit Mountains. Once I catch you, I’ll fetch a good price, enough for a few more jugs of bone-forging wine!”
The old hunter laughed as he approached the rabbit demon, his eyes fixed on Mo Fan, warning, “Toad demon, don’t move, or my arrows won’t be so kind!
Dead demons fetch less, but they’ll still buy me some wine money.”
