Code Mage Chapter 39

The dragon’s head, severed five thousand years ago, had long decayed into a small mountain. Only from high above could one vaguely discern the outline of the dragon’s skull. Realising what they were standing on, Ye Chui and Debbie trembled with indescribable excitement.

Dragons, said to be nearly extinct even in the era of the gods, were now mere legends. Some even doubted they ever existed. Yet now, Ye Chui and Debbie stood atop a dragon’s head!

“This is unbelievable,” Ye Chui and Debbie said, gazing at the black earth beneath their feet, their expressions filled with awe and solemnity.

Then they looked up. The time echo continued. They saw the headless dragon’s body, its massive wings still flapping unconsciously, blood spraying from the severed neck as it plummeted into the distance. The divine realm’s guardian beast was dead. The Black Gold Flame Dragon’s might was unquestionable, yet it had fallen to the red demon’s blade.

What were these demons?

What truths were hidden in the God-Slaying War, when humans fought against the gods?

Was the invasion nearing its end? No, shortly after the Black Gold Flame Dragon’s head was severed, a golden figure suddenly shot through the sky from afar!

It was a petite figure, wielding a giant sword nearly as long as her body!

“This is…”

Ye Chui was familiar with this image.

In truth, as the God Clan had become legend, only bards, historians, and adventurers delved into their history. Ordinary people paid little attention. Ye Chui, inheriting Wade’s memories, had only sparse knowledge of the God Clan, but one god he knew well was the Wealth Goddess.

He had seen what might be the last Wealth Goddess temple in existence, its weathered statue collapsing before his eyes. After that, he met a girl named Debbie. At this moment, the petite figure rushing to the scene after the dragon’s beheading was none other than the Wealth Goddess!

Ye Chui glanced at Debbie beside him.

Debbie’s face was alight with excitement, “That’s the Wealth Goddess! I can’t believe I’m seeing her!” Debbie’s name was the same as the goddess’s, chosen by her parents for good fortune.

In fact, Debbie bore some resemblance to the Wealth Goddess, not in appearance but, well, mainly in their petite, flat-chested figures…

Like Debbie, the Wealth Goddess had long black hair and a cute yet valiant appearance. Now, her face blazed with boundless fury, her eyes burning with rage, golden light radiating around her.

Debbie’s excitement surged again as she said to Ye Chui, “If Jirga saw this, she’d be thrilled! The fighting style of turning gold into dragon’s breath was pioneered by this goddess. She’s incredible!”

She couldn’t be more incredible!

The goddess roared through the sky, gleaming with golden light, wielding her massive sword. The “sword-wielding goddess” vibe was overpowering. What shocked Ye Chui and Debbie even more was that this petite girl’s combat prowess was no less than the Black Gold Flame Dragon’s, perhaps even greater. With a swing of her sword, she turned dozens of demons to ash, charging straight for the red demon.

Her giant sword matched the red demon’s blade, which had severed the dragon’s head, in power. Their battle was dazzling and intense.

But before the outcome could be seen, the images in the sky vanished.

The time echo ended.

The sky returned to its grey, lightning-streaked state, like a movie screen gone calm after the show. Yet Ye Chui and Debbie’s hearts were far from calm. It took half a minute for their racing pulses to settle.

“Why did we see these time echoes?” Ye Chui pondered. Debbie had spent half a month here and seen time echoes before, but they were always blurry. She hadn’t even realised those vague figures included these terrifying demons. He looked at Debbie, puzzled.

“As far as I know, time echoes are usually just blurry images, rarely this clear. This felt like being there,” Debbie said, shaking her head.

In short, it was the difference between a grainy bootleg and 1080p ultra-HD, right?

It was indeed perplexing. Debbie looked down at the ground, imagining the dragon’s head crashing to earth. She continued, “I wonder how the battle ended. What happened in the fight between the Wealth Goddess and the red demon?”

“Maybe we’ll see the next part someday,” Ye Chui said, but his mind turned to another thought, “Could the clarity of these time echoes have something to do with my identity as a transmigrator?”

He had seen a light on his iPad magic book, followed it to the Wealth Goddess temple, where it collapsed, opening a spatial gate. There, he met Debbie, who led him to the Ruins of the Gods, where they witnessed time echoes of the God-Slaying War. It all felt like fate.

These questions wouldn’t be answered easily. Ye Chui and Debbie decided to leave the area for now.

As they descended the mountain, which Ye Chui officially named Dragon Head Mountain, a fitting name, he summoned his magic book. Its magic was only at 21%. He called it out just to check the magic level, intending to store it again, but a notification on the book stunned him.

“New video file detected. View now?”

Ye Chui’s eyes widened as he repeated the message.

A video file?

His iPad magic book shared many functions with a real iPad, but he had checked before: the video player, though accessible, was unusable, requiring points to unlock. Where had this video file come from?

Without hesitation, he tapped the notification.

The iPad screen switched to the video player interface.

The interface had always been accessible, but the file list was empty. Now, a new file name appeared: [Prologue: The Fall of the Dragon]

“Could it be…” Ye Chui’s trembling finger tapped the file.

The screen began playing a video, and he quickly realised it was the time echo they had just seen, recorded from his perspective. The footage was slightly shaky but crystal clear, about twenty minutes long, like a polished special-effects film. The only flaw was the lack of sound. Ye Chui’s mouth and eyes widened, utterly stunned by the ultra-HD visuals, his body frozen.

Debbie noticed he’d stopped and waved at him, puzzled, “What’s wrong?”

“This short film is amazing!” Ye Chui blurted out, used to calling brief videos “short films.” No issue there.

“Short film?” Debbie looked confused. Though it was her first time hearing the term, she sensed something intriguing in it. She leaned in eagerly, “Hey, let me see, let me see!” But then, “Ugh, I can’t see anything.”

Others couldn’t see someone else’s magic book, which was a pity. Ye Chui wanted to share this incredible short film with Debbie.

He dragged the progress bar, speeding through the video to the end. As he was about to close the player, a card-like image suddenly appeared on the interface, like a recommended video on a streaming site. The card showed the Black Gold Flame Dragon soaring through the sky.

Below it was a single line.

“Summon the Black Gold Flame Dragon?”
