Code Mage Chapter 101

On their way back from a countryside outing, Ye Chui and his group encountered a guard searching for them.

This guard was the same one-eyed guard Ye Chui had met at the entrance of the Magic Book Tower. His face was hurried, and he wiped sweat from his forehead, saying, “Mr. Ye Chui, please hurry back. A divine envoy from the Church has just arrived in Stan Town, and Mayor Stan is receiving him.”

At Ye Chui’s request, most people had now learned to call him “Ye Chui,” a name somewhat strange to the people of this world.

“The divine envoy is here already?” Debbie’s eyes lit up immediately. “Then let’s hurry back.”

“Hmm?” Ye Chui noticed the one-eyed guard’s expression seemed unusual, so he curiously asked, “Has something else happened?”

The one-eyed guard glanced at Ye Chui, his expression conflicted, and said, “The divine envoy arrived on a flying magical beast, landing right outside the Mercenary Guild. Then, well, he let that beast eat Los’s horse in one bite.”

“What?” Ye Chui was shocked. “Is Los and his team alright?”

As some of the first friends Ye Chui made in this world, he had a strong fondness for Los’s mercenary team.

“Los and his team are fine. Knowing the man was a divine envoy, they didn’t dare confront him, but it’s too unfair for Los,” the one-eyed guard said. Having fought alongside Los’s team against the Dark Magician, he was close to Los and gritted his teeth in anger. “That divine envoy, relying on his status, is utterly overbearing. He doesn’t even respect Mayor Cass!”

“How can this be? Aren’t Church envoys supposed to be virtuous?” Resha said, puzzled. Though she often hung out with Ye Chui, lacking the demeanor of a proper believer, she still held the Church in high regard.

“Virtuous?” the one-eyed guard said angrily. “That depends on who they’re dealing with. Stan Town is just a remote place with no power or influence. Why would he care about us? You didn’t see his arrogant demeanor!” Still fuming, the guard remembered his purpose and added, “Enough of this. Mr. Ye Chui, please come back with me quickly.”

“Alright.” Ye Chui nodded, his expression darkening, and quickened his pace, following the one-eyed guard back to Stan Town.

“Ha? You say that small guild summoned the Black Gold Flame Dragon?”

Before the church under reconstruction, Divine Envoy Jamil sneered at Cass. “What Black Gold Flame Dragon? I think you’re just ignorant. How could a terrifying beast like that be summoned by a summoner from this place?”

The envoy had come to Stan Town because of the incident involving dark believers and a summoner over a month ago. He was now questioning Cass about the details. Cass, displeased with Jamil’s attitude, explained the events in detail, perhaps embellishing Ye Chui’s strength due to his frustration.

Of course, it wasn’t exaggeration. Summoning the ancient God of Ten Thousand Beasts, the Black Gold Flame Dragon, killing over a hundred Dark Magicians in one fell swoop, and ultimately overpowering the First Apostle Adams, who emerged from a blood-colored rift, were all facts.

But Jamil didn’t believe a word. He snorted coldly, eyeing the church being rebuilt by craftsmen, and said mockingly, “Summoning an evil magical creature like an apostle isn’t something just anyone can do. The fallen nun probably only summoned a fragment of Adams, less than one percent of his power. Anyone but a fool could handle that. Only people in a place like this would make a hero out of it.”

As for the church’s destruction, it was probably just due to years of disrepair.

“I’m telling the truth,” Cass said through gritted teeth. “Nun Resha can testify.”

“A nun fresh from the convent? Her words carry no weight,” Jamil scoffed, his face showing impatience. “Why aren’t they back yet? Making a divine envoy wait this long? I need to hurry to Wind Rock City nearby. I can’t stand staying overnight in a backwater like this!”

“They went on a mission and will be back soon!” Cass said, suppressing his anger. A month ago, Cass might have faced this calmly, but now, having regained the ambition of a Storm Warrior, he felt intense rage at Jamil’s attitude.

Fortunately, the one-eyed guard sent to fetch Ye Chui and his group soon returned, with members of the Random Magic Guild and Resha following closely. Gilga and Jiji had already been summoned back to the Spirit World by Debbie.

Jamil glanced at Ye Chui and the others, his eyes filled with even more contempt.

This is the guy who defeated an apostle? He doesn’t look powerful at all. And that nun, Resha? Is this remote town so poor they can’t even afford a proper nun’s robe?

Jamil coughed lightly, waiting for these people to approach and flatter him. As a Church envoy, this was the treatment he enjoyed everywhere, relishing the awe and fear others showed him, which gave him immense satisfaction.

However…

“Cass, looks like you’re recovering well. Your strength is almost back, right?” Ye Chui walked straight to Cass, greeting him with a cheerful smile, then casually glanced at Jamil. “Oh, the envoy’s here. Have you eaten?”

Jamil’s expression froze.

Before he could respond, Ye Chui rudely turned back to Cass. “Green recently invented a new seasoning. The grilled fish was unbelievably delicious. Tsk tsk, you missed out by not joining us on the outing.”

“Heh, next time I’ll definitely come along,” Cass replied with a smile, clearly understanding Ye Chui’s intent and happy to play along.

Jamil’s face twitched. Didn’t you say they were on a mission? Turns out they were… on an outing?

Ye Chui acted as if Jamil barely existed, but Resha, as a nun, maintained some decorum. She respectfully approached Jamil. “Lord Envoy, welcome to Stan Town. I am Resha, nun of the Blue Convent, temporarily managing the church here.”

Though Resha had taken over Stan Town’s church, she was only acting in a temporary capacity. Formal ownership required a lengthy application process.

“You’re Resha?” Jamil coldly sized her up, snorted, and said, “Making a nun of light oversee a remote place like this must be tough. Next time, I’ll have someone bring you some clothes.”

Resha was taken aback. “Huh?”

Debbie, unable to wait any longer, stepped forward, extending her small hand with a friendly smile. “Hey, enough talk. Where’s our reward?”

Jamil’s expression turned icy as he looked at Debbie, thinking to himself that small places breed uncultured barbarians. And this town is so poor, look how thin this girl is, such a frail frame…

He snorted, pulling a scroll from his robe, slowly unrolling it, and began reading aloud.

“In the glory of the Elemental God, the Church acknowledges the noble deeds of Magician Wade, Summoner Debbie, and their guild in Stan Town. Pope Boris personally awards this honorary scroll as recognition. May the glory of the Elemental God shine forever.”

After reading, he carefully rolled up the scroll and placed it solemnly in Debbie’s hands.

Debbie excitedly took the scroll, then stared at the envoy with wide eyes.

And then… nothing?

“What about the gold coin reward?” Debbie immediately asked, stretching her neck. She pointed at the church under reconstruction. “And the funds for rebuilding the church?”

“What gold coins?” Jamil casually brushed his sleeve, discreetly patting the purse at his waist. He glanced at the church being rebuilt and said arrogantly, “The Church does have funds for church reconstruction, but it seems you don’t need them. Since the church is already being rebuilt, I’ll grant this honor to the residents of Stan Town. Deduct it from their taxes. I’ll praise their selfless devotion before the Elemental God. As for gold coin rewards…”

Jamil looked at Debbie and Ye Chui, chuckling coldly.

“Greedy people, that papal honorary scroll is worth more than any gold coins. What more reward do you want?”
