Code Mage Chapter 17

The lightning spear struck Kaimis, and with a scream, his body crashed backward into the graveyard’s wild grass.

He scrambled to his feet, smoke rising from his charred clothing. Though injured, it wasn’t severe, but the anger on his face had turned to fear.

He hadn’t expected this rookie mage, whom he thought easy to bully, to injure him twice.

Soon, that fear was overtaken by twisted rage. The world was too unfair. He had trained for three years, yet he couldn’t match someone who had been a mage for just four days.

The worst part? This person had no exceptional talent, and his spellbook was clearly inferior to Kaimis’s own.

“Unfair, so unfair,” Kaimis muttered, his body trembling with fear and anger. He let out a sharp cry, his hand swiping across his spellbook. The water snake, shattered by Ye Chui’s [Lightning Strike], quickly reformed. This time, it didn’t attack Ye Chui but coiled around Kaimis.

The snake’s massive body lifted Kaimis off the ground, rushing toward Ye Chui under its protection.

At the same time, Kaimis drew a sharp dagger from his waist, screaming, “I’ll kill you, I swear I’ll kill you!”

“Well, that’s a neat trick,” Ye Chui remarked, slightly surprised. Using the water snake for protection and to boost his speed, while switching to close combat with a dagger, was likely a tactic Kaimis had developed over years.

Inside the snake, Kaimis moved unpredictably, the snake’s body distorting others’ vision, making it hard for Ye Chui’s spells to hit him, or so he thought.

Kaimis believed Ye Chui’s earlier [Lightning Strike], which shattered the snake’s head and hit him, was just luck, not skill. Just like when Ye Chui shocked him senseless yesterday, it was all a fluke.

But how many flukes could there be?

Ye Chui quickly adjusted his spellbook, capturing Kaimis in the camera lens. On the iPad screen, a white targeting frame flickered around Kaimis, locking onto him. When Kaimis was just two or three metres away, the camera fully locked on.

Ye Chui tapped lightly, and with a sizzle, [Lightning Strike] activated. Another lightning spear shot from the iPad, shattering the water snake with a boom.

The snake was pure water, non-conductive, but only against spells like [Lightning]. [Lightning Strike] was different, a true attack spell. The spear, solid-like upon leaving the iPad, easily broke the snake and struck Kaimis again.

With a scream and blood spraying from his mouth, Kaimis crashed backward, rolling several times before stopping. His broken water snake collapsed into a puddle, and his spellbook vanished, drained of magic and overwhelmed by his injuries.

Struggling to rise, he tried summoning his spellbook again but could only cough up blood.

In terror, he looked up to see Ye Chui standing before him, the strange, shoddy-looking spellbook floating above his head.

This filled him with dread.

Gasping heavily, a sudden thought sparked hope in his despair. He still had two allies. If they defeated Debbie, they could save him. Ye Chui’s magic was nearly depleted; he couldn’t possibly beat them.

“I haven’t lost!” Kaimis declared, glaring at Ye Chui. “My two allies aren’t ordinary. Their martial skills are honed to perfection. That summoner girl stands no chance against them, they…”

Just then, two figures were hurled over with a thud, crashing like sacks of mud nearby. Screaming, they tried to stand, but their twisted limbs left them writhing in pain.

Ye Chui and Kaimis stared, shocked. These were the two lackeys wielding a longsword and an iron axe, who had chased Debbie. Now, they were beaten to a pulp.

Ye Chui looked up to see Debbie approaching, accompanied by the muscular Angry Clown.

The clown’s face, meant to be comical with its painted makeup, was twisted with rage, veins bulging, muscles brimming with explosive power. In one hand, he held the iron axe taken from the second lackey, looking like a child’s toy in his grip.

With a snap, he broke the axe’s handle and tossed it aside.

“Aaahhh!” the clown roared, glaring at the two fallen men, flexing his biceps.

“Alright, you can go back now,” Debbie said to the clown, glancing at Kaimis.

“Aaahhh!” The clown seemed consumed by rage, unable to speak beyond roars.

“Go back, I said go!” Debbie snapped impatiently.

“Aaah!” After a few more roars, a colourful door appeared behind the clown.

Despite his terrifying, muscular appearance, the Angry Clown now seemed like a naughty child reluctant to leave playtime. He stepped into the summoning door, which vanished.

“Phew,” Debbie sighed, wiping sweat from her forehead. Glancing at the fallen lackeys, she said in a low voice, “The clown’s angry form always causes such a mess. What a troublesome spirit.”

Ye Chui rolled his eyes. After such a display of power, calling it troublesome? Nice show-off, girl.

“Is this the battle spirit you said comes at a great cost?” Ye Chui asked, recalling Debbie’s reluctance to summon it.

“No,” Debbie shook her head. “The Angry Clown isn’t exactly a battle spirit. Sure, he’s strong, but he’s too uncontrollable. The battle spirit I mentioned is a hundred, no, a thousand times stronger than the clown.”
