Code Mage Chapter 35

Due to Mayor Kas’s announcement about discovering the coordinates to the Relics of the Gods, many prominent figures in Stan Town had gathered at the ruins of the Temple of the Goddess of Wealth in the South Suburb.

As the conflict between Bilis, Ye Chui, and Debbie unfolded, a crowd formed around them. They saw Bilis summon his tentacle monster. Debbie, with a cocky demeanor, seemed poised to call forth her golden spirit, but instead summoned a cat-like creature, using it to distract the tentacle monster. Meanwhile, Ye Chui cast the [Wind Walk] spell, and the two flawlessly made their escape.

What a speechless pair…

But what Ye Chui and Debbie hadn’t anticipated was that, just as they were about to flee, an invisible, transparent wall suddenly appeared in front of them. With a bang, Ye Chui collided with it, forcing their rapid movement to halt.

Ye Chui looked ahead in shock. Unbeknownst to them, a towering armored figure had appeared. This burly man, over two meters tall, wore heavy armor and a war helmet with two sharp horns. Beneath the helmet was a cold, rugged face. In one hand, he held a black longsword, while above his other hand floated an orange-covered grimoire.

This was a sorcerer with swordsman abilities, a rare magic swordsman. From his attire, Ye Chui easily identified him: the president of the Minotaur Magic Guild!

He had cast a spell to block Ye Chui and Debbie’s path.

“You’re the ones who refused to join my guild and injured Ryan and the others?” A booming, thunderous voice came from the Minotaur magic swordsman, his eyes glinting coldly.

At the same time, Ye Chui noticed several robed Minotaur Magic Guild sorcerers appearing to block their escape route on one side, while Bilis, controlling his tentacle monster, stood on the other.

“You’re out of line!” A loud shout rang out from Mayor Kas, his face filled with rage. He reached for the greatsword on his back. Two guild presidents and several powerful sorcerers ganging up on two youngsters? This was something Kas couldn’t tolerate.

But just as he was about to act, an older swordsman with a white beard and sly, fox-like eyes stopped him, “Mr. Kas, don’t be rash.” He continued, “Those two kids have stirred up a lot of trouble. It’s best we don’t interfere. Don’t forget, you’re the mayor.”

As mayor, Kas held a position recognized by the empire, but he also had to maintain balance among the town’s factions. In some ways, it was a tough role. Recklessly offending the town’s major guilds wasn’t wise.

“So we just watch them gang up on those kids?” Kas asked angrily.

“It’s not necessarily a bad thing,” the old swordsman said with a nonchalant smile, patting Kas’s shoulder. “Mr. Kas, you’re no longer a carefree mercenary.”

Kas frowned, his angry expression giving way to a trace of helplessness as he recalled something.

Ye Chui and Debbie, now surrounded, heard Kas’s shout of “You’re out of line!” and Ye Chui felt a spark of hope. He had a good impression of Kas, thinking the town’s top swordsman might intervene. But to his disappointment, Kas only shouted once and then fell silent.

Ye Chui and Debbie exchanged a helpless glance, then subtly turned their heads toward the ruins of the Temple of the Goddess of Wealth. With enemies on three sides, that was their only possible escape route…

Bang! Bilis’s tentacle monster flung Xiululu, the small blue creature Debbie had thrown into its range, out of its grasp. The furry ball rolled a few times on the ground before stopping at Debbie’s feet. Unharmed, it stood up, panting heavily and glaring at Debbie with an expression that seemed to say, “Believe it or not, this cat will turn on you!”

Debbie quickly turned away, pretending to face the enemies, though her occasional guilty glances betrayed her. Soon, a summoning door opened beside Xiululu, and it slipped inside, vanishing.

“Childish tricks. Did you think you could escape like that?” Bilis said in a cold, effeminate voice. He glanced at the Minotaur Magic Guild president, “Sorn, I’ll take the girl. You handle the boy.”

Sorn, the Minotaur Magic Guild president, gave a soft grunt, seemingly agreeing with Bilis. He aimed his longsword at Debbie.

“No one can save you today. Summon that golden warrior, I want to test her!” Sorn, clearly a battle enthusiast, declared.

Summoning Jilga could easily dispatch these foes, but the steep gold coin cost was no small matter. Constantly accruing debt risked Jilga severing her contract with Debbie, not by her own choice but due to the contract itself breaking. If that happened, Debbie would no longer be able to summon her, regardless of Jilga’s wishes.

Debbie’s previous debt was incurred out of necessity in the Relics of the Gods.

“Looks like we have no choice,” Ye Chui said meaningfully to Debbie, who nodded. Though they hadn’t known each other long, they shared a certain unspoken understanding.

Ye Chui pressed close to Debbie, one hand on his iPad grimoire, swiftly selecting a spell: the basic attack spell [Dance of the Water Snake]. With a whoosh, a waist-thick water snake instantly formed.

Bilis and Sorn both showed a hint of disdain. Such a low-level spell was powerless against them.

Ye Chui quickly tapped his iPad grimoire a few times. The water snake opened its terrifying maw and lunged at Sorn.

Swish! Sorn’s black longsword slashed down, severing the snake’s head, its water-formed body dissipating.

Instead of expending magic to reform the snake, Ye Chui cast another spell: the basic attack spell [Thunder Strike], a 20% magic-powered spell. Amid a powerful crackling sound, it shot toward Kaimis on one side.

Facing two guild presidents and several sorcerers, Ye Chui not only chose to fight but also attacked both presidents simultaneously?

“You’re courting death!” Bilis’s blue hair fluttered as he felt insulted. Two tentacles from his floating monster whipped forward, blocking the lightning strike. Blue currents seemed to course through the creature, eliciting a terrifying screech, but it appeared unharmed.

Then, Sorn’s longsword and the tentacles of Bilis’s monster began their assault on Ye Chui and Debbie.

Basic Support Spell [Wind Walk]

Yet, Ye Chui and Debbie once again turned into a gust of wind and escaped. The other Minotaur Magic Guild sorcerers, thinking they’d break through their direction, moved to intercept.

But Ye Chui and Debbie didn’t head that way. Instead, they charged toward the ruins of the Temple of the Goddess of Wealth.

A crowd still stood near the ruins, where the elderly sorcerer Merlin was attempting to open the coordinates. This direction seemed the least likely for escape, yet Ye Chui and Debbie chose it.

“Are they mad?” someone exclaimed instinctively.

Ye Chui and Debbie weren’t mad.

Merlin, focused on opening the coordinates to the Relics of the Gods, paid little attention to other matters. He hadn’t even glanced at Ye Chui and Debbie’s confrontation with the guild presidents. He felt he was moments from opening the door, just a final push away. Then, as Ye Chui and Debbie rushed near him, a spatial door suddenly cracked open.

“Huh? What?” Merlin was momentarily stunned.

Only a few people stood on the ruins: Merlin and… Green.

The sorcerer who wasted his spatial talents on gambling was wiping sweat from his brow, looking for a vantage point to watch how Ye Chui and Debbie’s conflict with the two guild presidents would resolve. He was silently relieved to have distanced himself in time, or he’d be caught in the feud, and even his own guild president might not be able to smooth things over.

Befriending Ye Chui and Debbie didn’t seem like a good bet. He’d better avoid them in the future…

Then, with a bang, Ye Chui collided with him unexpectedly. With a yelp, Green was knocked flying. Under countless stunned gazes, Green, Ye Chui, and Debbie tumbled into the spatial door, which closed and vanished.

Merlin, the elderly sorcerer, could only mutter, “Huh? What?”
