Code Mage Chapter 87

Spirits summoned by unlocking videos require Ye Chui’s points to act, but music BGM consumes magic power instead.

When facing Old Bond and other dark followers earlier, Ye Chui spent 100 points to unlock a battle song BGM, leaving him with 25 points. The fight with Old Bond and his group earned him 50 points, and though Ye Chui didn’t directly kill the evil spirit, it seemed to grant him 30 points as a reward.

He now had 105 points remaining. After searching through the playlist, Ye Chui quickly selected a song that might affect the undead, which also required 100 points to unlock.

The number of points needed to unlock a music resource didn’t depend on its fame but on its potential power. As for what kind of power it held, whether it provided attribute buffs or other effects, that was a matter of guesswork. However, looking at his chosen song, Ye Chui felt confident in his choice.

Maintaining the adult Valkyrie form drained Debbie’s magic power immensely, and she was barely standing. Green supported her, while Reisha rapidly chanted a purification scripture, a white light shield enveloping the three of them.

Some undead charged but couldn’t breach the shield’s protection.

Their faces were filled with anxiety as they saw more undead attacking Ye Chui and Jiji, nearly surrounding them completely.

The dark followers had used Southwind Outpost as their base for countless years. Merchants and bandits who tried to settle there were sacrificed in the blood pool. To avoid suspicion, they periodically sacrificed followers whose life force was depleted (dark followers gained power by consuming their life force, so most didn’t live long) to let others complete the task of “clearing the bandits at Southwind Outpost.”

Over the years, the number of tortured souls bound in the blood pool was countless. Even though Reisha had purified most of them, the remaining souls, now malevolent spirits, were still a significant threat due to the resentment built up over years of torment.

The night was dark, with only moonlight spilling down.

Reisha’s expression grew increasingly desperate, helpless against the seemingly endless undead.

Then, a strange piece of music suddenly rang out. The melody wasn’t complex but was highly energetic. Amid the layers of undead, faint glimmers of dancing light broke through.

“Ah!”

“Ah!”

The undead’s roars echoed continuously. Reisha, Debbie, and Green instinctively squinted. The light wasn’t from the Valkyrie’s divine power but was similar to Reisha’s chanting, capable of countering the undead.

Undead lacked fear, driven only by ferocity and savagery, but at that moment, they instinctively tried to flee the light’s embrace. Amid the dancing light and shadow, Ye Chui, glowing brightly, appeared in the eyes of Reisha, Debbie, and Green.

The rhythmic, peculiar music came from Ye Chui’s grimoire.

The song included lyrics in a language not of this world. Though unintelligible, Reisha, as a devout nun, could sense the power within the song. The light emanating from Ye Chui pulsed rhythmically. He made no extra movements, but within the light, figures danced strangely, their shadows swaying.

When these dancing figures touched the undead, the undead were instantly assimilated, drawn into the dancing light’s atmosphere. They were purified, their savagery dispelled, ascending peacefully to the Pure Land of Bliss.

Jiji stood dazed in the light, feeling her heart stir, tempted to dance along with the figures.

Ye Chui began to move, turning wherever he went into a stage, leaving the undead nowhere to hide.

“What, what’s going on?” Green, supporting Debbie, stared in astonishment at the bizarre scene. Ye Chui had previously demonstrated using music to boost his attributes with believer chants, but now, was he purifying the undead?

“I kind of want to dance along…” Debbie said tiredly, her head bobbing to the rhythm. Then she snapped out of it and shouted to Jiji on the ruins, “Jiji, stop wasting my magic power and turn back into a kid!”

Jiji, like a starstruck fan, was scampering around Ye Chui. Hearing Debbie’s call, she responded with a “Jiji” and her tall form dissipated, reverting to a petite girl. Her tiny wings fluttered as she flew around Ye Chui, chirping, “Jiji, jiji ji!” as if mimicking the music’s melody.

“I’ve heard some believer nuns can purify undead with an exorcism dance. The music from your brother’s grimoire seems to be an exorcism dance tune…” Reisha said, stunned.

As a top student at the Holy City Monastery, Reisha was well-versed, but Ye Chui’s strange exorcism music baffled her. She had long noticed her friend’s grimoire was unusual, but this was too extraordinary. Could it really be used like a Bible? And the music wasn’t even played by Ye Chui himself.

Watching Ye Chui in the glowing light, she suddenly shouted, “Little brother, dance the exorcism dance with those light figures! It’ll be even more effective!”

“…”

Damn, dancing Pure Land of Bliss? That’s too embarrassing, no way.

Even without dancing, the music’s power was strong enough. The once-threatening undead were quickly purified and vanished. A few tried to flee the ruins, but undead were bound by territorial limits, like ghosts unable to leave a haunted house. They could only move within the Southwind Outpost area.

Ye Chui watched the “Map Navigation” on his grimoire, satisfied as the red dots representing hostile undead dwindled. He was pleased with the exorcism effect of Graveyard Disco.

There were likely many BGMs with exorcism effects, but when preparing to use one, Ye Chui’s first thought wasn’t Graveyard Disco but the famous Great Compassion Mantra. However, unlocking it required 500 points, which he couldn’t afford yet. He’d try it later.

Soon, as Graveyard Disco ended and a new song began, all the undead were purified. The wailing and howling that had filled the ruins ceased entirely.

At that moment, Ye Chui’s grimoire ran out of magic power. It had been nearly depleted when he was enthralled by the evil spirit, with only a brief recovery during the tentacle ordeal. Now it was completely drained. The iPad and music vanished, and Ye Chui sat tiredly on the ruins, wiping sweat from his face.

Exorcising spirits felt like holding a concert.

Jiji, still buzzing with excitement, fluttered around him, chirping, “Jiji ji, jiji ji!” Her tiny arms and legs mimicked the Pure Land of Bliss dance. What a nerdy kid!

That same night, as the evil spirit Hughes was turned to ash by Jiji, in Stan Town’s Church of Guidance, Old Nun Rosia, chanting Bible verses before the sacred elemental spirit statue, suddenly shuddered, her aged face turning pale.

Hughes, transformed into an evil spirit through her prayers with the Dark Bible, shared a blood connection with her, so she felt his demise most directly.

“Hughes… why, why did it fail? This shouldn’t be possible!” she whispered, her face twisting with ferocity. Reviving an evil spirit was dangerous, potentially affecting all living beings nearby with a blood sacrifice. Though Rosia had orchestrated Hughes’ creation, she wasn’t a dark follower herself, merely a nun tainted by the Dark Bible’s forbidden power, so she hadn’t gone to Southwind Outpost.

In her mind, there should have been no chance of failure. When Ye Chui’s group entered Southwind Outpost, they should have had no chance of survival. Though anxious these past days, she never believed the plan would fail until she felt Hughes’ death.

“Wade…”

A menacing growl escaped her.

In the vast church behind her, flickering candlelight danced as shadowy figures emerged from the darkness, each accompanied by a black-covered grimoire.

Only the most gifted could gain a grimoire’s recognition to become a mage, and if a grimoire broke, the mage could no longer cast spells. But Rosia, empowered by the Dark Bible, could forcibly seize others’ grimoires. As a place for soul purification, the church received deceased mages for final prayers, allowing Rosia to secretly collect numerous grimoires over the years.

Just as she had once tried to seize Riken’s grimoire.

Black grimoires were more evil and brutal, usable by anyone with magic power without needing recognition, but their wielders became increasingly ruthless.

Those who used black grimoires, called dark mages, were considered as evil as dark followers.

Fueled by hatred for the church, Rosia, while awaiting her son’s revival, had quietly amassed an army of dark mages.
