Code Mage Chapter 9

Magic books develop new spells as a mage grows, and for most, the first spell they comprehend is a basic elemental spell. These spells have a key trait: sustainability.

For example, the basic elemental spell [Fire] allows a mage to continuously convert magic power into flames as long as they have magic power.

Similarly, the basic elemental spell [Water] enables a mage to endlessly produce water while their magic power lasts. Legends say powerful water elemental mages can even create an entire lake.

Now, Ye Chui had used points to download and install the basic elemental spell [Lightning]. Through the water snake’s conduction, he unleashed it on Kemith. Amid the crackling sound, blue lightning surged from the iPad, causing Kemith to scream continuously, “Aaaah!” As long as Ye Chui kept the spell active, Kemith would remain in this “electrocuted” state until Ye Chui’s magic power ran out.

The water in Kemith’s [Dance of the Water Snake] was formed directly from magic power, pure and non-conductive. But the snake had bitten Ye Chui’s arm, mixing in traces of blood, turning it into a conductor.

As the [Lightning] spell continued, Ye Chui’s iPad magic book’s remaining magic power steadily dropped: 48%, 47%, 46%…

With a splash, both water snakes dissolved. Though the water was no longer a medium, the lightning still targeted Kemith. [Lightning] was a long-range attack spell, and the water snake’s conduction had only helped Ye Chui aim more accurately.

Breathing heavily, Ye Chui strode toward Kemith, his expression furious.

Kemith’s magic book had vanished. He writhed on the ground, screaming and rolling in agony. Soon, he began pleading, “Let me go, please, I was wrong… Stop, stop, I’m practically electrocuted to death…”

The others in the mercenary guild were stunned. They had mocked Ye Chui’s magic book and sneered at his audacity to come here, yet he had beaten Kemith to a pulp.

This wasn’t how the story was supposed to go.

Debbie, who had been ready to summon her battle spirit to save Ye Chui, saw her phantom door vanish. Her mouth hung open in a cute, shocked expression. She hadn’t expected Ye Chui to turn the tables. Moments later, she grinned smugly, her nose practically in the air: Hah, this guy was indeed a worthy companion.

The hall was filled only with the crackling of electricity and Kemith’s screams.

The blonde maid, who had been shocked, snapped out of it, her expression shifting to a different kind of astonishment. She rushed to Ye Chui’s side. “Mr. Wade, please stop. Are you trying to kill someone in the guild?”

Ye Chui trembled, his fervor cooling. He quickly tapped the [Lightning] spell icon on his iPad, deactivating it. The lightning ceased, leaving Kemith groaning on the floor, smoke rising from him, his hair frizzed, looking utterly wretched.

The iPad showed 21% magic power remaining. Ye Chui glanced at it, then scanned the crowd, his eyes daring anyone else to challenge him.

“He actually beat Kemith… Is he really just three days into being a mage?”

“He’s incredible. His magic book already comprehended the [Lightning] spell, but he didn’t use it earlier, waiting to channel it through the water snake to hit Kemith!”

“His magic book is tattered and white-covered, but he’s really strong!”

The crowd’s murmurs shifted from mockery to faint admiration.

Some helped the barely conscious Kemith to his feet. His companions glared coldly at Ye Chui before rushing him out of the guild hall. The blonde maid approached Ye Chui, saying with concern, “Mr. Wade, you’ve really opened my eyes, but I must warn you, Kemith isn’t one to let things go. He might cause trouble later.”

“No problem,” Ye Chui said, shaking his head. Now that he understood how points worked, he wasn’t afraid of such dangers. Fighting more would only increase his points; he almost hoped Kemith would try again.

“I didn’t expect your magic book to have the rare lightning attribute. But what was that shield? It looked like a light-element spell. Is your magic book dual-element?” Debbie said excitedly, patting Ye Chui’s shoulder, only to make him groan from his injured arm.

“Your wound looks serious,” the maid exclaimed. “The guild has mages with light healing magic. I’ll find one…”

“No need to bother anyone,” Debbie interrupted, waving her hand. She pulled out her summoning key, and a pink door appeared before her. “I have a spirit who can heal injuries.”

Ye Chui had already shocked the guild, and now Debbie astonished them again.

She was a summoner!

Some had noticed when she nearly summoned her battle spirit earlier, but now, almost everyone confirmed it. Stan Town had only three summoners, and Debbie wasn’t one of them.

Ye Chui curiously eyed the pink door. As Debbie inserted her summoning key, it slowly opened, revealing a beautiful woman in a black tuxedo with long green hair. She had an ethereal quality, standing tall with a calm expression. After scanning the room, she bowed to Debbie in a noble gesture, her soft, pleasant voice saying, “Miss Debbie, you summoned me. Your all-purpose butler, Aphra, is at your service.”

“All-purpose butler?” Ye Chui repeated. So spirits could be service-oriented too.

“Aphra’s a highly capable service spirit. She can heal, do housework, and mend clothes,” Debbie boasted, pointing to her outfit. “See, she fixed my clothes.”

That explained why Debbie’s damaged robe was pristine after her bath.

“Not only that, Aphra can massage to relieve fatigue. She’s the most powerful service spirit!” Debbie said proudly, hands on hips.

The guild erupted in gasps of amazement.

“Miss Debbie, speaking of massages, I’ve just thought of a new technique for chest enhancement. Want to try it?” Aphra said suddenly. “Though the previous thirty-nine attempts failed, I’m sure this one will work.”

The guild fell deathly silent.

Ye Chui couldn’t help glancing at Debbie’s chest. Thirty-nine failed attempts… that number seemed to carry her resentment over her flat chest.

Debbie’s face turned bright red.
