“Alright, alright, Mum won’t say anymore.”
Seeing her daughter’s exasperated look, Mother Lan smiled and focused on applying her makeup.
After finishing, Mother Lan inspected her work, very pleased with the result, and praised, “My daughter is just naturally beautiful. With makeup, you look like a celestial fairy.”
“Mum, you should say I look like a celestial fairy without makeup. Saying it only after makeup makes it sound like my beauty depends on it.”
Lan Ruoruo looked at herself in the mirror. Her mother’s makeup skills were indeed a bit better than hers.
As expected of her mum, elegant and refined her whole life.
“My daughter is a celestial beauty with or without makeup, capable of charming a truckload of men.”
Mother Lan asked, “Which set of jewellery are you wearing tonight?”
“Something simple. I don’t like anything too complicated. Honestly, I’m so beautiful already, jewellery or not, I look just as good. My elegance is innate, no need for those tacky things.”
Lan Ruoruo opened the dressing table drawer, took out a small jewellery box, and from it, picked a pair of stud earrings, putting them on while looking in the mirror.
She also took out a necklace and put it on. No ring, though, as she disliked wearing any jewellery on her hands, feeling it interfered with typing or signing.
“You always wear those two pieces to every banquet, never changing. That necklace is so small and simple, too plain, and so are the earrings. With all the jewellery you have, why keep it if you don’t wear it?”
Seeing her daughter choose just those two pieces, Mother Lan couldn’t help but nag.
“Since you were born, every birthday or major holiday, your elders have given you so much jewellery. I kept it all for you, even setting up a jewellery vault for you when you grew up, with all your pieces stored there.”
“Those little jewellery shops out there can’t compare to your vault, yet you let them sit in the dark, never wearing them. What, saving them for your future daughter?”
Lan Ruoruo laughed, “Mum, I’m not even married yet. Where would I get a daughter?”
“Maybe I’ll never have a daughter, or any kids. I might not even marry. But I have nieces and nephews. I can give it to my niece as her dowry.”
“I really don’t like it. I just can’t force myself to wear them.”
Lan Ruoruo appreciated the jewellery, but wearing it wasn’t her thing.
A unique young heiress, indeed.
Despite owning countless valuable pieces, she left them displayed in the vault, unworn.
At work, she wore no jewellery at all, keeping things plain and simple.
Mother Lan was at a loss with her.
This daughter was just like that.

“No matter how great your nieces and nephews are, they’re not your own. They have their own parents to care for. How many can look after their aunt?”
“You can say this to me, but don’t say it in front of your grandpa. He’s worried sick about your marriage, even regretting raising you all too well.”
“He says you’re too outstanding, with such high standards that you can’t find a match.”
In this city, few young people were more accomplished than her son and daughter.
Her son was a bit better, at least willing to date, not too picky. As long as the family background was clean and the person was decent, he’d like them and be open to marriage.
Her daughter’s standards were sky-high. She found fault with everyone, saying they didn’t click, weren’t her type. So many eligible young men from families matching the Lans’ status, and she dismissed them all.
