The housekeeper respectfully agreed and quickly called the third master and his wife.
When Hai Tong heard the old lady mention her grandmother’s illness, she phoned her mother-in-law while the old lady played with Beibei. Once the call connected, she asked with concern, “Mum, is Grandma alright?”
Tang Junye replied, “It’s her old problem, just insomnia. She didn’t sleep well and has a headache.”
“Tell Grandma not to overthink things. Old people already have light sleep, and too many thoughts make insomnia worse, so she can’t sleep.”
Poor sleep easily causes headaches.
Even she, still young, sometimes got headaches from lack of sleep.
“I told her, but she says she’s not thinking about anything, just can’t sleep. We called the family doctor to check her. It’s nothing serious. Her insomnia isn’t new.”
“Tongtong, your grandma says not to worry about her. She’s fine. She wants you and A Yin to bring the two children to see her when you have time.”
Hai Tong said, “Mum, tell Grandma that in a couple of days, once Zhan Yin is less busy, we’ll bring the children to visit. Tell her to eat well, drink well, and enjoy herself.”
Old Madam Tang’s health was not as robust as Old Madam Zhan’s. She was two years younger, yet walking was difficult. Going out required a wheelchair and two dedicated carers.
Her hearing had also deteriorated. Speaking to her required very loud voices for her to hear.
But her mind remained sharp. She always thought of her eldest grandson Zhan Yin and looked forward to his family of four visiting.
Unfortunately, Zhan Yin and his wife were busy with work and usually visited every ten days or half a month. When the old lady missed the children especially, Tang Junye and her husband would bring their grandchildren back to keep Old Madam Tang company.
The Tang family did not lack girls, yet Beibei still received the highest treatment there. She was the Zhan family’s treasure and Tang Junye’s only granddaughter. How could the Tang family neglect her?
After confirming Old Madam Tang was fine, Hai Tong ended the call.
“Grandma, I’ll take Beibei to eat something first.”
With guests arriving soon, it would be hard to slip away later.
The old lady reluctantly handed her great-granddaughter to Hai Tong and said kindly, “Take her for breakfast. Her food is still warming in the kitchen.”
“Where’s big brother?”
Little Beibei asked about her brothers.
Hai Tong held her hand and walked to the dining room, smiling, “The brothers and sisters went out to play long ago. After you finish breakfast, Mummy will have the nanny take you to find them, okay?”
Beibei nodded and answered in her milky voice, “Okay.”
Eager to join her brothers and sisters, Beibei ate breakfast much faster than usual.
By the time Mr and Mrs Lan entered, little Beibei was full.
Hai Tong carried her out of the dining room and happened to see the couple following the housekeeper in.
“Hello, Mr Lan, Mrs Lan.”
Hai Tong greeted them politely.
Mrs Lan’s eyes lit up at the sight of mother and daughter. A natural smile appeared on her face. “You must be Hai Tong. I often hear Ruoruo mention you. This is Beibei? Ruoruo especially likes Beibei.”
“Beibei is so cute.”
No wonder her daughter adored Beibei and often spoke at home about Zhan Wei’s little niece being as lovely as jade. Though only just over a year old, she was very clever. Hearing her call “Auntie” in that milky voice melted hearts.
She said seeing Beibei made her impulsively want a daughter.
Beibei was the kind who tricked people into having girls.
Now seeing her in person, Mrs Lan believed her daughter’s words. Zhan Wei’s niece really was adorable, fair and tender, with exquisitely delicate features, especially those big eyes like black grapes, dark and bright.
