“It’s not like I’m asking you to worry, I just wanted to tell you.”
Zhan Yin tilted his head and stole a kiss. “Wife, you’re still so full of energy, shall we go another round?”
Hai Tong: “……”
Entangled by him once more, they burned again.
After that, Hai Tong no longer felt like chatting idly with him and went off to meet the Duke of Zhou in her dreams.
The night passed without further words.
Early the next morning, Zhan Yue took the silk banner that he had someone make overnight and hurried to the hospital.
Before Zeng Xiaoya finished her shift, he presented the banner to her.
Zeng Xiaoya was delighted.
For a doctor, nothing brings greater joy than receiving a thank-you banner from a patient.
The two of them even took a photo together.
This was exactly what Zhan Yue had hoped for.
That way, he could openly possess a photograph of Zeng Xiaoya.
“Dr Zeng, you’re off work now, let me treat you to breakfast.”
Zhan Yue smoothly invited her to share breakfast.
Zeng Xiaoya smiled. “Mr Zhan, thank you for the banner, how could I possibly let you buy me breakfast too? I’ll treat you.”
“Though I usually keep breakfast simple, I hope you won’t mind.”
Normally, after night shift she would just grab something casual from one of the little eateries outside the hospital, or go home hungry and eat there.
The auntie at home made the same few dishes every day, and after so many years she was sick of them, so most of the time she ate a little something outside.
“I’m not fussy, I’ll eat anything. Even if you treat me to steamed rice rolls, I’d love it.”
Back when big brother and sister-in-law had their flash marriage, sister-in-law often packed steamed rice rolls for big brother’s breakfast. Big brother privately told them that only after getting married did he finally get to eat rice rolls.
Before that, they really had never tried them.
Sister-in-law had pulled big brother down to earth and made him experience ordinary life. Afterwards, the brothers also went out to taste the rice rolls their eldest brother kept mentioning.
Although they were born into wealth and had enjoyed fine food since childhood, they truly weren’t picky. Even a simple portion of rice rolls could be devoured with relish.
Zeng Xiaoya laughed. “One plain sausage rice roll costs five yuan, with extra meat and egg it’s six. How could I treat you to something so cheap?”
“At the very least I should treat you to a bowl of mixed pork and meatball rice noodle soup, ten yuan a portion.”
Zhan Yue smiled. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
“Mr Zhan, wait just a moment. I’ll hand over to the day shift and then I’ll be off.”
“All right.”
Zeng Xiaoya went to complete the handover with the day-shift doctor.
Zhan Yue waited for her at the nurses’ station.
Ten minutes or so later, Zeng Xiaoya had changed out of her work clothes, picked up her handbag, and walked out.
“Mr Zhan, let’s go. Breakfast is on me.”
Zhan Yue followed her with a smile.
At the lift they ran into the classmate who admired Zeng Xiaoya. When that classmate saw Zhan Yue beside her, his expression changed slightly.
“Xiaoya, finishing work?”
The classmate asked her.
“Yes, just clocking off. You’ve only just arrived?”
They were on different shifts now. Zeng Xiaoya worked nights, her classmate worked days.
“Xiaoya, I packed some breakfast for you.”
The classmate raised his right hand. He really was holding a packed breakfast.
Zeng Xiaoya politely declined his kindness.
“Lao Tong, Mr Zhan brought me a thank-you banner, so I’m treating him to breakfast. Thanks anyway.”
Her classmate said with obvious regret, “What a pity I have to start work, otherwise I could join you.”
Zeng Xiaoya smiled but said nothing in reply.
Soon she added, “Lao Tong, I’m heading off now.”
