The three of them left the hospital.
Zeng Xiaoya commuted to work on an electric scooter, while Zhan Yue had naturally driven his Maybach to bring Grandma for the check-up.
“Xiaoya, ride with Old Eight. That way, we can chat all the way there.”
The old lady, worried that Zeng Xiaoya might ride her scooter, quickly invited her to join them in the car.
Zhan Yue added, “After dinner, if you want to go home and rest for a bit, I’ll drive you back. Then in the afternoon, I’ll bring you to work again. That way, when you finish in the evening, you can ride your electric scooter home.”
Zeng Xiaoya replied, “That works.”
She helped the old lady into the car first, then got in herself.
“Xiaoya, have you bought a car yet? Old Eight knows a lot about cars. If you ever need to buy a new one, you can ask him for advice. He knows every type of car inside out.”
Zeng Xiaoya thoughtfully fastened the seat belt for the old lady.
The old lady was advanced in age, her movements no longer as nimble as in her youth. Buckling the seat belt had become slow for her. With Zeng Xiaoya helping, she simply let her do it.
“I have a car for getting around. It’s not as good as Zhan Yue’s, just a joint-venture model worth a couple of hundred thousand. I haven’t thought about replacing it for now. As long as it runs, that’s fine. I don’t chase the latest trends.”
New models came out all the time.
She was not like those wealthy people who bought whatever new car caught their eye.
She had simply bought a car for transport. She only used it for self-drive trips during holidays. For daily commuting, riding the electric scooter was far more convenient.
“A car worth a couple of hundred thousand is very good these days.”
The old lady said, “You usually ride your electric scooter to work, don’t you? It’s much more convenient. My granddaughter-in-law also loves riding an electric scooter to and from work.”
She was referring to Hai Tong.
Zeng Xiaoya responded with a hum. “Yes. Traffic in Guancheng is too heavy. During rush hours, it’s completely gridlocked. An electric scooter really shows its advantage then.”
“Zhan Yue is different. Men like them still prefer proper cars.”
The old lady said that since Zhan Yue knew every type of car inside out, his garage at home must be filled with all sorts of luxury vehicles.
“That’s true. He and his brothers all love buying cars and playing with them. The garage is packed with different models. I always tell them they only have one backside. How many cars can they drive? Even rotating through them, it takes ages to cycle back to the same one.”
“Xiaoya, you haven’t been to Old Eight’s house yet, have you? Next time you have a day off, I’ll invite you over as a guest. I’ll take you to see his garage. It’s just like a motor show.”
The old lady extended the invitation warmly.
“I’m often at Old Eight’s house. It gets too boring there. I just hope someone can keep me company, talk with me, chat a bit.”
“Well, I wouldn’t want to disturb Zhan Yue.”
Zeng Xiaoya knew that Zhan Yue owned more properties than just the one at Wansheng Gardens.
He had never invited her to visit his other houses, and she would not ask. The two of them were not close enough for that.
“Disturb what? It’s me inviting you to come and talk with me. When you go, you’ll be our honoured guest. Would he dare chase you out? Xiaoya, it’s settled then. Next time you’re off, come over and keep Grandma Zhan company for a chat.”
“Although I have children and grandchildren all around, the young ones are busy. Those who work, work. Those who study, study. Apart from Beibei who can accompany me every day, the others really don’t have much time for me.”
The old lady sighed. “When you get old, the thing you fear most is loneliness. You just want someone to keep you company and talk.”
Zhan Yue said while driving, “Grandma, don’t make us sound so unfilial. When we have free time, we do chat with you and take you for walks.”
They simply could not stay with Grandma all the time.
