At the time, Zhan Yue had been in a car accident, but his injuries were not serious. He did not want to stay in hospital, but his older brothers eventually forced him to be admitted.
The department head told her that the patient was the young master of the wealthiest Zhan family and instructed her to take special care of him.
As a doctor, she always treated every patient with the same seriousness. She would not change her approach just because someone came from a powerful family.
Still, the head had meant well with the reminder, so she took it on board.
Zhan Yue had never lied to her.
It was only that Senior Lin did not know Zhan Yue’s true background and had always assumed he was some idle trust-fund son living off his family.
That was why Senior Lin thought she had been deceived as well.
“His parents probably prefer He Yuehua anyway.”
Second Aunt remarked.
“I don’t know. That is his business, nothing to do with me. Whoever his parents like has no bearing on me.”
She and Senior Lin would never become husband and wife.
“Yes, just ignore him. He is playing both sides, chasing you here while taking He Yuehua and his parents to the seaside there.”
“No matter how many boats he has in the water, I am not getting on any of them. Why should I care?”
Xiaoya leaned closer to Second Aunt’s ear and whispered, “That night Senior Lin got very drunk. He Yuehua went to collect him and take him home. She stayed over, and the two of them shared a bed.”
“He Yuehua took photos of them in bed together and sent them to me. So, Second Aunt, there is absolutely no chance for Senior Lin and me.”
Second Aunt asked in a shocked whisper, “Did they go all the way?”
“No. He Yuehua said Senior Lin was extremely drunk that night. He mistook her for me, but they did not actually complete the act. He just fell asleep.”
“But the fact they shared a bed is undeniable. He Yuehua also told me she intends to use the incident to make Senior Lin take responsibility.”
Xiaoya continued softly, “Second Aunt, I have no romantic feelings for Senior Lin. I truly do not mind. But Second Uncle has always hoped we would end up together, and he still sees Senior Lin as one of his students.”
“Second Uncle may be disappointed. When you have a quiet moment, talk to him gently. Do not let it upset him too much. Feelings are about fate.”
It is not a matter of who arrives first, but of genuine connection.
Even childhood sweethearts who grew up together will not become husband and wife if there is no destiny.
Those who are meant to be will find each other across thousands of miles and become a couple.
She and Senior Lin shared affinity but no destiny.
“Yes, I will comfort your Second Uncle properly. He does favour Dr. Lin, but he also realises now that you two are not suited. Xiaoya, what do you think of Zhan Yue?”
“Second Aunt thinks he is excellent and worth entrusting your life to. Would you consider him?”
Before Zeng Xiaoya could reply, Second Uncle spoke up. “What are you two whispering about that I am not allowed to hear?”
“Wife, I am your husband. You share secrets with Xiaoya but keep them from me.”
“And Xiaoya, I am your own uncle.”
Zeng Xiaoya laughed. “Second Uncle, Second Aunt and I were just talking about women’s private matters. It would not be suitable for you to hear.”
“I am going upstairs now.”
She smiled, stood up, went outside, wheeled her electric scooter in, and parked it by the clinic door.
“I am heading up.”
Second Aunt smiled as she watched her climb the stairs.
Once she had gone, Second Uncle pressed his wife. “What were you two murmuring about?”
“I am not telling you. Let it keep you guessing.”
Second Aunt laughed, stood up, carried the two baskets of fruit upstairs, and put them in the fridge so they would not spoil so quickly.
