“Grandma, are you not staying here tonight?”
The old lady had stayed for two nights. Zhan Yue hated to see her leave. He wanted her to remain longer, so he could fulfil his filial duties and also let her teach him more about how to win a girl’s heart.
“No. You will not need me for the next couple of days. I am going back to spend proper time with my great-granddaughter. My great-granddaughter is the most adorable.”
Zhan Yue could only stand up and see Grandma and his sister-in-law out.
He had known that once Grandma had a great-granddaughter, all her grandsons would be sidelined.
He remembered how, as a small boy, he would often ask his mum why she had not made him a girl. He said that if he had been a girl, Grandma would definitely have loved her best.
It used to leave his mum both amused and exasperated.
His mum had said she had dreamed of having a daughter, but unfortunately he had turned out to be a boy.
She had gone through four pregnancies, and all four were boys.
The Four Great Vajras.
In his mother’s words, they were lucky the brothers were filial and had been raised well. If they had not been, she could have been driven mad with anger.
They were also lucky to have been born into a wealthy family. If they had been born poor, whether the four Vajras would ever have found wives would have been uncertain, and their parents would have worried themselves to death.
After watching Grandma and his sister-in-law depart, Zhan Yue went back inside.
It was only a little past nine in the evening, not even ten yet.
In the past, he would still have been out socialising, often not returning home until after midnight. Now, before ten o’clock, he was already at home watching television.
Zhan Yue switched on the television. He had not watched it in a long time.
After a short while, he could not settle to it.
He turned the television off and went upstairs.
He entered his small study, sat down at the desk, and wondered what he should do.
He could not concentrate on reading.
He did not feel like dealing with work.
Write love letters.
The idea suddenly struck him.
So Eighth Young Master Zhan fetched pen and paper and began handwriting love letters.
Even so, the letters he wrote would not yet reach Zeng Xiaoya’s hands.
He thought that if he wrote several, then when the moment was right he could give them all to her at once. Receiving a whole stack of his love letters would surely touch her deeply.
……
“Mummy, I want Mummy, I want Mummy, I don’t want Daddy……”
Hai Tong had only just stepped out of the car when she heard her daughter crying.
The little girl was crying very loudly.
Zhan Yin was carrying her, pacing back and forth, coaxing her endlessly. “Beibei, don’t cry. Mummy will be back soon. Shall Daddy play a game with you?”
“I don’t want that. I want Mummy. I only want Mummy.”
“Mummy, when is Mummy coming back? I want Mummy.”
The little girl’s eyes were red from crying, and the tears on her face had never stopped.
Zhan Yin was heartbroken. No matter what he tried, he could not calm his daughter.
Zhan Muchen and Su Meng kept bringing toys over to amuse their little sister, but right now she wanted only her mummy.
She wanted no toys.
She wanted neither Daddy nor her brothers.
“Alright, alright, you want Mummy. Mummy will be here soon. Let us go outside and see if Mummy has arrived.”
With no other choice, Zhan Yin carried his still-sobbing daughter and led the two boys out of the house.
Su Meng whispered to Zhan Muchen, “I never thought Beibei could cry so much at night. When she cries, she isn’t cute at all.”
Baobao whispered back, “When my mum is home, she doesn’t cry. She’s like this. Once it gets late, she absolutely must have Mummy.”
“Little children aren’t cute when they cry.”
He himself was still a little child, after all.
Su Meng said, “Even when I’m not crying, my dad says I’m not cute. He’s always calling me a monkey who can’t sit still.”
Baobao laughed. Sometimes his dad said exactly the same about him.
The two boys exchanged a look of perfect understanding.
“Mummy’s back.”
