“I think Dr Zeng is someone with great fortune. Who knows, she might really marry into a wealthy family and become a young madam one day.”
The old lady thought to herself. Her Old Eight liked Dr Zeng.
Dr Zeng was destined to marry into a wealthy family.
The Lin family should stop coveting Dr Zeng.
From Old Eight, she had learned that Dr Lin and this Miss He had shared a bed. Miss He went to Dr Lin’s home every day, helping with housework and tidying the place.
After someone had given so much, it would not be right to leave Miss He with nothing.
Dr Zeng would not compete with Miss He and was willing to step aside and let Dr Lin go to her.
Lin’s mother gave two dry laughs, her tone laced with sarcasm. “As if it’s that easy to marry into a wealthy family. Wealthy families are not simple to enter. Besides, there are only a handful of true wealthy families. The women who marry into them all come from the same upper-class circles.”
“They value matching status and strategic marriages. Dr Zeng’s family is decent compared to ordinary people like us from the countryside, but compared to real wealthy families, it’s still far off. How could a young master from such a family ever marry her?”
“She does look blessed, but plenty of people look blessed. Does that mean everyone can marry into a wealthy family and become a young madam?”
“People live in reality. They have to accept reality and stop daydreaming about impossible things.”
Lin’s mother spoke these words in a lowered voice, but both He Yuehua and Lin’s father could hear her.
He Yuehua said softly, “Auntie, please do not speak of Dr Zeng like that.”
“I am not saying anything bad about her. I am only telling the truth. At my age, I have never even seen what a wealthy family looks like.”
The old lady smiled and said, “Wealthy families are just like that. In the end, they are ordinary families too, just with better circumstances and busier lives. Their better circumstances come from generations of hard work.”
“That may be true, but their threshold is high. When it comes to choosing a wife, they always choose someone of equal status. We have all heard Cinderella stories, but how many real Cinderellas are there in life?”
“Say a little less.”
Lin’s father gently nudged his wife.
They were sitting outside Dr Zeng’s consultation room. If others overheard and it got back to Dr Zeng, their son would be mortified.
Lin’s mother pursed her lips and muttered something under her breath, too low even for the old lady sitting beside her to catch.
The old lady thought to herself that Xiaoya was a perceptive and wise girl.
“Mum, it’s our turn.”
It was Lin’s mother’s turn to see the doctor.
Dr Lin turned to help his mother up, but He Yuehua reached her first and supported her.
The old lady noticed that as Lin’s mother reached the consultation room door, her face bloomed into a wide smile.
Lin’s mother was only there for a follow-up. Dr Zeng took her blood pressure, then wrote out a few test requests for further checks. Once the results came back, they would decide whether to adjust her medication.
If everything was well controlled, no changes would be needed, and she could continue with the original dosage.
Ten minutes later, the Lin family emerged from the consultation room.
Lin’s mother smiled at the old lady and said, “Old lady, I will go first.”
The old lady nodded.
Dr Lin glanced at the old lady a couple of times and asked his mother if she knew her.
“No, we do not know each other. She was just sitting beside me, and we chatted a little.”
As the family walked away, Zhan Yue returned with the old lady’s test results. The two rivals came face to face.
“Dr Lin.”
Though they were rivals, Zhan Yue still greeted him politely when they met.
“Why is Mr Zhan here? Is this pretending to be ill, or actually ill?”
Dr Lin’s question carried a hint of sarcasm.
