The death of the monkey demon sent a jolt through Red Eye. He turned slowly, catching sight of a familiar face.
“Laibao?”
Red Eye was stunned, never expecting that the one to save him would be the newly risen little demon, Laibao!
At that moment, Mo Fan, holding a large bow, waved at Red Eye, grinning, “Brother Red Eye, what’s this? Only two days apart, and you don’t recognise me anymore?”
“It’s really you, you ugly thing?!”
Hearing the familiar voice, Red Eye was both shocked and delighted, circling Mo Fan and exclaiming, “You’re something, aren’t you? It’s only been a few days, and you’ve become this fierce?!”
“The demonic aura on you is way stronger than mine!” Red Eye said with a hint of envy, “You must’ve stumbled upon some massive opportunity, or your cultivation wouldn’t be this impressive!”
Mo Fan smiled without answering, shifting the topic, “Brother Red Eye, why was that monkey demon chasing you?”
Like the other small demons of Black Wind Mountain, Red Eye had a simple mind, easily distracted.
Sure enough, Mo Fan’s words made him chuckle, “Speaking of that, I’ve got something to show off about!”
“I was out hunting for meat down the mountain when I stumbled into a peach grove, and guess what?
I discovered a huge secret in that peach grove!”
Looking at Red Eye’s secretive air, Mo Fan couldn’t help but find it amusing. What kind of grand secret could a little demon like Red Eye uncover?
But the mention of the peach grove piqued his interest.
Before coming to Black Wind Mountain, he’d heard of a peach grove, also occupied by a group of monkeys.
“Could it be the same peach grove?”
Mo Fan wondered but thought it unlikely, as that grove didn’t seem to have any transformed demons.
To satisfy both his curiosity and Red Eye’s need to boast, Mo Fan asked, “What kind of secret could make you, Brother Red Eye, so excited?”
“Heh, not telling you!”
“…”
Mo Fan was speechless, inwardly cursing, “This fool!”
“Brother Red Eye, saying that really hurts my feelings. I risked punishment from the demon guards to come down the mountain to find you!
If I’d known you’d be so stingy, I wouldn’t have bothered!” Mo Fan said, feigning distress.
Though he didn’t think Red Eye’s secret was anything special, the guy was being too tight-lipped, just dangling it in front of him!
The stingier Red Eye was, the more determined Mo Fan became to pry out this so-called “secret”!
Otherwise, he’d feel cheated, since his excuse for leaving Black Wind Mountain was to find Red Eye.
If he was taking the blame, he’d better get something out of it. Plus, he had a faint suspicion.
This secret was likely the real reason the monkey demon was chasing Red Eye, perhaps tied to that so-called spirit wine!
“You came specifically to find me?”
Red Eye was taken aback by Mo Fan’s words.
“Of course, or I wouldn’t dare leave my post. If the Great King found out, I’d probably end up as a feast!” Mo Fan pouted, “If I’d known you were this stingy, I wouldn’t have come looking for you!”
“Well… how did you know I’d left the mountain?” Red Eye scratched his head, his eyes flickering.
“I didn’t know. It was Brother Dali who told me. He said Zhazha would’ve been the best to come find you, but he was being watched by One-Eyed Dingmu’s demon and couldn’t get away.
And he didn’t trust Laifu, so he gave me this task. Who knew you’d be so untrusting, not even sharing the peach grove secret with me!”
“Well… fine, fine! I’ll tell you then!”
Red Eye scratched his ears and cheeks, his eyes growing redder, grumbling, “It’s only because of that big dumb ox Dali, or I wouldn’t tell you!”
“So, what’s the secret?” Mo Fan perked up instantly.
“In the depths of that peach grove, there’s a massive thousand-year-old peach tree. The monkey demons have stashed loads of spirit wine there, something called Monkey Wine,” Red Eye said mysteriously.
“That’s it?”
Hearing the secret was indeed about spirit wine, Mo Fan was deeply disappointed.
Spirit wine was brewed from various rare treasures. It sounded impressive, but aside from some top-tier spirit wines, most didn’t have much spiritual energy.
And what could you expect from wine brewed by a bunch of wild monkey demons?
“Hey! What’s with that tone? If I say it’s a big secret, it’s not that simple!”
Red Eye snorted, then glanced around to ensure no one else was near before whispering to Mo Fan, “That spirit wine isn’t ordinary. Almost all of it is of low-grade quality! And there’s even Yellow-grade spirit wine!”
At that, Mo Fan’s eyes lit up!
Yellow-grade spirit wine!!
There was actually graded spirit wine!
This got Mo Fan excited, though he still doubted Red Eye’s words a bit, so he smirked, “Didn’t know you could lie without blinking, Brother Red Eye. I almost believed you!”
“What, I’m not lying! I’m telling the truth!!” Red Eye panicked.
“Not lying? You said the monkey demons hid the wine in a thousand-year-old peach tree. They must guard it heavily. How did you sneak in and find out?” Mo Fan scoffed.
“Oh, you ugly thing, why don’t you believe me?”
“Am I that useless in your eyes?!”
Red Eye was fuming at Mo Fan’s words.
“It’s not me saying it, it’s Brother Laifu. He’s been staying at my cave, hasn’t he? He told me that in our patrol team, you’re the weakest, Brother Red Eye!” Mo Fan blinked, making it up on the spot.
“That Laifu! How dare he badmouth me behind my back!”
Red Eye’s eyes grew even redder with anger, “I admit my combat strength is the weakest, but when it comes to digging, not many in Black Wind Mountain can match me!”
Hearing this, Mo Fan understood. Red Eye had likely dug his way into the thousand-year-old peach tree and discovered the spirit wine!
“I believe you, Brother Red Eye. Laifu’s clearly trying to stir trouble. What a vile heart!”
Mo Fan’s tone shifted, sounding indignant.
“Good brother, I knew you were a reliable toad!” Red Eye was touched.
“Uh… so, Brother Red Eye, do you know the details inside that thousand-year-old peach tree?
How many monkey demons are there?” Mo Fan blinked at Red Eye.
Red Eye grinned, “Didn’t peg you for such a cunning one. Got your eye on something?”
Well!
This stingy rabbit wasn’t as dumb as he seemed!
Mo Fan chuckled inwardly, instantly realising Red Eye was doing this on purpose, betting he’d be interested in the spirit wine.
This blasted rabbit was a cunning one too!
At that thought, Mo Fan gave a wry smile, “Cunning? I can’t compare to you, Brother. You’re playing Jiang Taigong fishing here!”
“Who’s Jiang Taigong?” Red Eye looked puzzled.
“Uh… never mind. Tell me about the Monkey Wine, let’s figure it out together?”
“No wonder Dali says you’re sharp, Laibao. You’re one clever demon!”
In the dense forest, a rabbit demon and a toad demon exchanged a knowing grin, looking a bit sly.
