Gan Papa suppressed his anger, and his voice rose several notches.
Cold Jun really wanted to speak up for his future brother-in-law, but after thinking about it, he stayed silent.
Helping at this moment would only backfire!
Cold Jun sat huddled in the corner of the sofa, silently cheering Wen Kai on with his eyes.
Cold Father glanced disapprovingly at Gan Papa: where was the agreed calm?
The young man seemed to have no major flaws. They could not treat a guest so poorly. If word got out, it would make both families look unreasonable!
It would also easily trigger Gan Tao’s rebellious streak.
Sure enough, as soon as Gan Papa raised his voice, Gan Tao rushed out with a plate of fruit. She glared fiercely at her father. “What are you all chatting about? You sound so happy?”
Her words seemed concerned but were actually a warning. Gan Papa’s heart nearly broke. He turned his head away and refused to speak.
Wen Kai took over. “We were talking about postgraduate studies. I said I want to work first and then do a master’s. Uncle said he wants you to go straight into one.”
“Postgraduate? I do not want to! You should not wait until after working to do a master’s either. It is too much hassle. Just go straight into it. That way, when you graduate with your master’s, I will have my bachelor’s. Would that not be perfect?”
Gan Tao was the type who could study well but did not particularly love it. A bachelor’s degree was already excellent. Why bother with a master’s?
In any case, Gan Tao had never considered postgraduate studies herself.
Gan Papa was nearly furious enough to die at his daughter’s words.
What do you mean “perfect”?
Perfect for marriage?
Dream on!
Even someone as straightforward as Wen Kai knew he could not let his girlfriend keep defending him. It would anger his future father-in-law. He immediately rejected Gan Tao’s suggestion to “graduate together”. “Do not commit to that so firmly right now. If there is a chance to do a master’s, of course you should. Uncle and Auntie have provided you with such good conditions. You may not need to rely on qualifications to earn a living later, but reading more books while you can is never a bad thing.”
These words were quite pleasing. Gan Papa’s brows relaxed slightly.
Gan Tao still wanted to speak, but Gan Mama called from the kitchen. “Tao Tao, come back quickly! The fruit is not all cut yet!”
How was it not finished? They had already cut several plates.
Gan Tao dawdled, unwilling to leave. Cold Jun jumped up from the sofa corner. “Hurry, hurry. Is there not still some Hami melon? Go cut a bit more.”
“Are you not allergic to Hami melon?”
Gan Tao exposed him. Cold Jun pushed her towards the kitchen. “I want to test again if I am still allergic…”
With both siblings out of the living room, Gan Papa lowered his voice. “You do not need to say these things to flatter us. You may date Tao Tao, but we will absolutely not agree to marriage.”
Gan Papa’s stance was clear.
Before meeting the parents, Wen Kai had been truly nervous. He had expected Gan Tao’s family to oppose them and had even prepared for the worst: being ordered to break up immediately!
He never imagined that Gan Tao’s father would only oppose marriage and not the relationship itself.
Wen Kai felt as though a massive pie had fallen from the sky. He was overjoyed, and his whole spirit lifted.
“Uncle, I will not mention marriage until Tao Tao completes her studies. Whether she does a master’s or a PhD, I will support her one hundred percent. I am not saying this to flatter you. I truly mean it. Tao Tao is still too young now. She does not even understand the meaning of marriage.”
Improving her qualifications would be good for Gan Tao.
This buffer period would help her mature in her thinking compared to now.
If, once more mature, Gan Tao still chose Wen Kai, he would be delighted.
Wen Kai had chosen to work after his bachelor’s for the same reason. While Gan Tao pursued further studies, he could first build some economic foundation and prepare for their future family.
Wen Kai explained his plans to Gan Papa and Cold Father. Gan Papa was too emotional to take it in, but Cold Father remained more rational.
“You have already secured your job after graduation?”
Wen Kai nodded. “Yes, I have confirmed it with the company. They asked me to go through campus recruitment in the second half of the year.”
Cold Father could not help but view Wen Kai more favourably.
The company Wen Kai mentioned was a well-known internet firm. Even Cold Father, who did not rely on a salary, knew how difficult it was to get in.
“I believe you are still in the second semester of your third year?”
“Yes. After summer vacation, I will be in fourth year!”
The young man was impressive. Securing such a good company in the second semester of third year showed real ability!
Cold Father cleared his throat and continued playing the villain. “Right now, you are only talking. Who knows if you will actually get hired smoothly? Once you are truly employed by that company, I will personally and absolutely agree to you dating Tao Tao.”
Wen Kai stood up swiftly and bowed to Cold Father. “Thank you for your recognition!”
It was not full recognition yet!
Cold Father could only laugh helplessly.
But because of this, his impression of Wen Kai improved further.
Businesspeople tended to fear dealing with bookworms. Since Wen Kai was not one, the likelihood of Gan Tao suffering hardship with him would be much lower!
…
While Wen Kai worked hard to show sincerity to his girlfriend’s family, Wen Ying was also busy.
Yuan Fenghui took Wen Ying to the television station’s studio. Before the formal interview began, Wen Ying could chat with the host for half an hour.
“This helps you get to know each other. The recording will be more relaxed later.”
Yuan Fenghui handed Wen Ying a sheet of paper.
Wen Ying looked down. It was the outline for today’s interview.
“We follow this outline completely?”
“I have reviewed it. There are no major issues. This is CCTV after all. We cannot restrict their questions.”
That was what she said, but if there were truly excessive questions, Yuan Fenghui would not allow them.
Wen Ying sounded a little disappointed. “I thought the questions would be sharper.”
Was it not said that Miss Ran might interfere? She had not made a move?
Yuan Fenghui rolled her eyes quickly. “So you find it too bland?”
A steady, safe interview might not be spectacular, but it would certainly be secure.
Wen Ying smiled brightly at Yuan Fenghui without speaking. Yuan Fenghui pondered. “You mean… it is not what I am thinking, is it?”
Wen Ying folded the outline away. “Is it possible?”
It was possible, but this proactive trouble-seeking energy worried Yuan Fenghui a little. She only wanted this little fish to stay motivated. Had she accidentally overstimulated her?
“How do you want to do it? A full confession session?”
Yuan Fenghui confirmed again. Wen Ying nodded. “I do not have much negative material. There is only this one that could be dug up. Rather than letting Miss Ran attack me with it later, better I confess it myself.”
Wen Ying convinced Yuan Fenghui.
Yuan Fenghui went to discuss with the production team. The producer was astonished. “Are you serious?”
The team had no intention of digging for scandals. What did it mean that you were voluntarily revealing one!
Yuan Fenghui smiled. “Of course we are serious. Little Fish is a pure person. We fear no questioning.”
Though they had never heard such a request, it would create better programme effects. The producer happily agreed.
The host and Wen Ying sat at the same table, chatting.
“I have met many writers. You are different from all of them.”
Wen Ying laughed. “For example?”
“You are very bold.”
The host pointed to the new interview outline. “There is a reason you are always criticised. Deep in your bones, you refuse to be ordinary!”
