Soon, a taxi sped toward them, racing down the small road and pulling into the grove, stopping right in front of everyone.
“Huh? Who’s this guy?”
Wei Xinghuo, completely clueless, couldn’t help but blurt out a snide remark as he watched the taxi appear so abruptly.
But when the taxi came to a halt, a burly man stepped out from the back seat, slamming the door shut in a rage before storming toward Wei Xinghuo and shouting,
“Wei Xinghuo! Open your damned eyes and take a good look at who I am!”
After the man spoke, Wei Xinghuo sized him up for a long moment before finally covering his mouth in shock, exclaiming,
“You… you’re Cheng? How did you…?”
“How did I not drown back then, right? Hmph! If it weren’t for Bai Zhan, the kind-hearted man under Young Marshal Xu, saving me, I’d be long dead!”
“And now, since the heavens won’t let me die, it’s clear they want me to rip that hypocritical mask off your face and show the world your true colours!”
Next, Cheng, dragging his crippled leg, bowed to Xu Fei, Wei Kangnian, and the others one by one before recounting the events of that year in full.
Xu Fei had only heard Bai Zhan mention it once in passing and had tacitly approved of his actions.
He hadn’t realised just how cold-blooded and ruthless Wei Xinghuo had been back then.
Not only had Wei Xinghuo led a group to beat Cheng, already disabled, into a pulp, but to ensure no one could come after him for debts in the future,
he’d sent men to dump the unconscious Cheng into the capital’s moat that very night.
Fortunately, Bai Zhan had caught wind of it, or Cheng would’ve met a tragic end.
After Cheng finished his story, Wei Xinghuo could no longer sit still. He leapt up, shouting and roaring as he charged toward Cheng,
“You bastard, spouting lies here, I’ll make you…”
But before Wei Xinghuo could finish, Wei Kangnian, who’d finally had enough, raised his hand and delivered a fierce slap across his face.
The blow sent Wei Xinghuo spinning in place twice before he stopped.
What shocked and unsettled Wei Xinghuo even more, though, was that he hadn’t expected his godfather to actually strike him.
“Enough! You wretched fool! The evidence is undeniable now, yet you still try to argue? Are you truly trying to drive me to my grave?”
Wei Kangnian’s hand, pointing at Wei Xinghuo, trembled uncontrollably, showing that among everyone present, he was the one most heartbroken.
Wei Kangnian, who had once pinned his hopes on Wei Xinghuo becoming a great man, could never have imagined that the foster son he’d raised would turn into a scourge on society!
“No… it’s not like that, Godfather, let me explain…”
Wei Xinghuo’s mind was in chaos, instinctively trying to justify himself, unaware that Wei Kangnian had already lost all faith in him.
Slap!
Another sharp sound rang out, but this time, Wei Kangnian unexpectedly struck himself across the face.
“I, Wei Kangnian, must’ve been blind to take you in back then, and it’s my failure as a father that turned you into this disaster!”
“Look at what you’ve become! Are you worthy of the clear sky and bright sun above your head?”
“Listen well, from this moment on, we have no father-son bond left, our ties are severed, completely!”
With those words, Wei Kangnian’s gaze turned ice-cold in an instant.
