Feeling the astonishing speed at which her injuries were healing, Duanmu Yun couldn’t help but marvel.
“Good, good, but when it comes to Gong Zisheng and the Red Buddha Society, I do find it quite tricky. Right now, I don’t have any solid, key intelligence in hand.”
This was indeed Xu Fei’s biggest headache at the moment.
He’d put in a lot of effort to gather information, but so far, nothing substantial or valuable had come up.
At this point, Duanmu Yun spoke up,
“Could I ask you for a favour? I have a relative in the countryside near the capital who’s been suffering from a chronic illness for years, so…”
“You’re asking me to go treat them? That’s an easy task.”
Xu Fei agreed readily, but Duanmu Yun continued,
“Of course, I’m not just asking you to treat them for nothing. My relative’s family mentioned that, for a while, a lot of mysterious people were showing up in their remote village. I think it might be connected to the Red Buddha Society.”
Only then did Xu Fei realise Duanmu Yun wasn’t just using him as a tool, she was offering intelligence in return.
“Really? Then you rest up here, give me the address, and I’ll head over to check it out!”
Duanmu Yun sent him the address, and Xu Fei turned to leave immediately after receiving it.
Watching the door close behind him, Duanmu Yun sighed,
“What a straightforward guy, not a shred of charm. Doesn’t he know to look after someone a bit before rushing off?”
By now, Xu Fei had left the hotel. He called Bai Zhan, instructing him to temporarily handle the company’s follow-up matters, then set off driving straight toward his destination.
But he hadn’t gone far when someone flagged down his car.
“Are you Doctor Xu? I’m here on Duanmu Yun’s request to guide you, just hop in my car!”
Seeing the person’s enthusiasm, Xu Fei decisively parked his car in a nearby lot and got into theirs.
Once inside, Xu Fei felt a wave of drowsiness and leaned his head against the window.
Unbeknownst to him, the gentle swaying of the car actually lulled him to sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, Xu Fei woke up groggily.
Turning his head, he noticed the seat where the “auntie” had been was now empty, leaving just him and the driver in the car.
And the scenery outside was all wrong. What had been a bustling cityscape of towering buildings had turned into a wild expanse of mountains and forest! Even for the countryside, this was far too desolate!
Instantly on guard, Xu Fei shouted,
“Stop… stop the car! Who the hell are you? Where are you taking me?”
Startled by Xu Fei’s sudden outburst, the driver slammed on the brakes.
Once the car steadied, the driver turned around, flashing Xu Fei a sweet smile.
“Doctor, you’re awake! Don’t panic, I’m Duanmu Qing. I heard my cousin pulled some strings to get you to come treat my mum in the village. Didn’t she mention this to you?”
Duanmu Qing’s sweet smile was so angelic, it was almost disarming.
Xu Fei froze for a second. To avoid revealing he was here to dig for intel, he quickly waved his hands and shook his head,
“No… she didn’t say anything, how was I supposed to know we’re going to a village to treat someone?”
