Duanmu Lei naturally understood the gravity of this bet, so he wanted to keep mocking to steer the conversation elsewhere, but he was stopped by Dong Tianyi beside him, who looked at Xu Fei with a playful smirk.
“No problem, I, Dong Tianyi, accept your bet today!”
“Good! You’ve got guts, then let’s set a time!”
Hearing this, Xu Fei stood up, glaring at the insufferably arrogant Dong Tianyi, silently vowing to teach him a lesson!
“One day from now, at the First People’s Hospital in the capital, I’ll be waiting for you there in person!”
After saying this, Dong Tianyi immediately strode out, and Duanmu Lei, with a cold snort, followed close behind.
The Mercedes in the courtyard roared to life once more, then sped off into the distance.
At that moment, Duanmu Qing’s father came in with the food he’d just prepared, puzzled to see everyone in the room looking glum except for Xu Fei, unable to figure out what was going on.
“What’s wrong, old lady? Wasn’t it all lively just a moment ago? Where’s our son and that classmate of his?”
Seeing the scene, Duanmu Qing’s father hurriedly set the dishes and chopsticks on the table, asking anxiously.
“Dad, don’t even mention my brother! He tried to sell me off and stormed out in a huff when it didn’t work, let’s just eat ourselves!”
Duanmu Qing had been fuming since her brother walked through the door.
Now that she could finally let it out, she felt a rush of satisfaction, picking up her chopsticks to start eating and handing a pair to Xu Fei as well.
Xu Fei instinctively reached out to take the chopsticks, unsure of what to do, so he just stood there for the moment.
“What kind of talk is that from you, girl? Isn’t your brother doing this for my sake, for the family’s sake?”
Duanmu Qing’s mother stepped in to smooth things over, but she didn’t realise her daughter couldn’t tolerate even a speck of nonsense.
Hearing this, Duanmu Qing shot to her feet with a huff, slamming her chopsticks onto the table.
“All this talk about it being for the family’s good, I reckon you’re already starting to miss that overseas-educated son-in-law of yours, aren’t you? Looks like this meal’s off!”
With that, Duanmu Qing grabbed Xu Fei and stormed out, hopping into the car and speeding off, leaving the two elderly parents staring at each other in bewilderment.
“Well… you didn’t really need to get so upset over this.”
The ride was quiet, and Xu Fei could only hear Duanmu Qing’s soft sobs as she pedalled, prompting him to offer some comfort.
“I… I’m not upset, I’m just furious, I hate that I was born into such a poor, narrow-minded family, now that I’ve finally grown up, I absolutely won’t just give in to them like that!”
As she said this, Duanmu Qing suddenly slammed on the brakes, turning back to look at Xu Fei with a hopeful expression.
“Um… you’ve got to win tomorrow, alright? If you really win, I’ll… I’ll consider being your girlfriend!”
After saying this, she hit the accelerator again, dropping Xu Fei off in town.
The entire ride was silent except for the roar of the engine, not a sound otherwise.
“What’s going on? How does winning mean she’ll be my girlfriend?”
Xu Fei’s mind froze at her words, leaving him feeling a bit lost and unsure.
