After Dong Tianyi said this, he didn’t expect Auntie Li to suddenly shove away the stethoscope he’d offered.
“I… I don’t want you examining me! Ever since I left the operating room yesterday, my back’s been a bit sore and numb, and it got even worse today before the rain!”
“Well… what do we do then? Oh, Mum, just behave and let the doctor take a look, you’ve got to when you’re ill!”
Duanmu Lei was starting to panic now, frantically trying to buy Dong Tianyi a chance to fix things.
“Isn’t Dr. Ye right there? If anyone’s going to examine me, it should be him!”
Hearing the old lady speak up about her condition for the first time, Duanmu Lei and Dong Tianyi had no choice but to step aside.
Only then did Xu Fei slowly approach. Without a word, he pulled out a silver needle and inserted it into Auntie Li’s back. Before long, she stopped crying out in pain, and her complexion improved considerably.
“What… what on earth is going on here?”
As Dong Tianyi and Duanmu Lei exchanged bewildered glances, unsure of what to do, the ward door suddenly swung open, and in walked a middle-aged man in a white coat.
“Eh? Dean Fang? You’re back early?”
“What’s that? Do I need to file a report with you to come back ahead of schedule?”
Dean Fang certainly lived up to his title, his presence commanding the room.
Once inside, Dong Tianyi, perhaps out of guilt, seemed noticeably timid.
“Well… no, Dean Fang, I was just a bit surprised, that’s all!”
Though Dong Tianyi played it off casually, his mind was racing with anxiety. He’d calculated everything but hadn’t anticipated that Dean Fang, who rarely meddled in hospital affairs, would show up here!
Just two days ago, Dean Fang had left for a study trip out of town, so how had he returned early today?
“I was passing by and heard from a nurse that a patient in here was shouting up a storm, so what exactly is going on, Director Dong?”
Dean Fang’s calm words hit like a death knell, leaving Dong Tianyi too rattled to respond for a moment.
“It’s… nothing, Dean Fang, just a patient with an unstable condition. I was in the middle of re-examining her!”
If Dean Fang weren’t here, or if it had been anyone else, Dong Tianyi might have bluffed his way through with that excuse.
After all, in this hospital, the only ones with more authority than him were Dean Fang and Vice Dean Wang.
Vice Dean Wang usually put on a sanctimonious front at work, but behind closed doors, at places like the Flower of Earthly Riches, he played harder than Dong Tianyi ever did, so he wasn’t worried about him.
But Xu Fei, Duanmu Qing, and the others weren’t pushovers either. The moment they heard the hospital dean had arrived, they snapped to attention.
“Dean, don’t listen to Dong Tianyi’s nonsense. I’m the patient’s family. He treated my mother’s chronic back pain yesterday with no results, and now I suspect he’s used improper medical methods.”
Duanmu Qing seized the moment, sounding like a downtrodden citizen in ancient times encountering the emperor on a rare outing. She quickly recounted the whole story of Dong Tianyi’s bet with Xu Fei over treating her mother.
“Oh? Is that so? It seems the hospital’s affairs aren’t keeping you busy enough, Director Dong, if you’ve got time to develop a taste for gambling. So, how did it all turn out in the end?”
