He followed like a walking corpse for a few steps before finally making up his mind.
“Mr. Xu, perhaps you should go on alone. I really can’t keep up!”
“Of course, I, Ma Sanlaizi, know how to repay kindness and am no coward! I’m just… just afraid of being a burden and dragging you down!”
Hearing Ma Sanlaizi’s words, Xu Fei could understand his feelings.
The main reason for bringing him along was to see if he could spot any strange, hidden clues in the Gong family’s estate.
Now, it seemed the massive, mysterious underground palace before them was the most likely target.
In other words, Ma Sanlaizi had largely served his purpose.
Forcing him to continue would not only make him a liability but also put his life at great risk!
So Xu Fei nodded generously, pointing to the path they came from.
“I understand. Hurry back the way we came, before the Gong family finds this place!”
On their way in, Xu Fei had brought him through the Gong family’s main gate.
If Ma Sanlaizi wasn’t quick enough, leaving the underground palace might still lead to him being caught by the Gong family again.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Xu. I, Ma Sanlaizi, have been through my share of scraps. I may not be good at much, but escaping? That’s my speciality! Take care on the road ahead!”
Ma Sanlaizi clasped his hands, gave Xu Fei a respectful bow, and left without looking back.
Without Ma Sanlaizi’s company, the journey did feel a tad dull.
But at least Xu Fei could now use his abilities without restraint.
He activated his X-ray vision, and almost nothing around him could escape his gaze.
As he looked around, his X-ray vision revealed some peculiar secrets.
Namely, murals hidden on the walls of the underground palace.
Xu Fei knew about murals, they were a method of record-keeping used by ancient people before writing was invented.
Anything deemed important enough to preserve was immortalised in murals.
With his X-ray vision, Xu Fei deciphered the general meaning of the wall murals.
“It seems to depict a small local faction paying tribute to a great kingdom, and then… why does the mural break off here?”
As he examined further, Xu Fei noticed that where a mural should have been, there was nothing.
But it wasn’t completely empty, his fingers could feel the grooves when he touched the surface.
Clearly, a mural had once existed here but had been forcibly destroyed for some reason.
This left the mural unable to tell its full story.
Xu Fei felt a pang of regret. Ever since he cultivated the Lingbao Tongtian Technique and gained X-ray vision, he could usually discern the stories behind any artefact or antique.
But despite seeing so many murals, the Lingbao Tongtian Technique hadn’t activated.
After some thought, Xu Fei understood why. Though the murals were laid out piece by piece on the walls, they collectively formed a single artefact. Without seeing the complete mural, he couldn’t reconstruct the scene from that era in his mind.
“Such a pity, I’ll have to keep moving forward!”
Xu Fei sighed and pressed on. As he walked, his X-ray vision spotted a group of uninvited guests.
